Macquarie University Health is Australia’s first fully integrated academic health enterprise, bringing together impactful research and education at the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences and the excellence of clinical care at MQ Health. MQ Health is a controlled entity of the University that provides clinical services to the public through Macquarie University Hospital, specialist clinics and Mindspot.

Macquarie University Health is seeking a Head of Commercial Finance, MQ Health to deputise for the Finance Director and play a pivotal role in driving financial strategy and commercial performance across our integrated health enterprise. This is your opportunity to lead the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and business partnering function within MQ Health, delivering the insights that shape strategic and operational decision-making at the highest levels.

In this senior role, you will partner with the senior management of MQ Health, leading a team to support clinical and operational leaders, translate complex financial information into actionable insights, and build the analytical capability that underpins sustainable growth and value-based patient care.

You will also play a key role in the next stage of growth for Macquarie University Health, with the development of new budgeting, reporting and analysis processes for the integrated academic health enterprise - defining and combining the key drivers of teaching, research and clinical success across MQ Health (clinical services) and the Faculty of Medicine Health and Human Sciences (teaching and research).

Applicants with healthcare, hospital or clinical healthcare sector experience will be prioritised.  Commercial experience in a Higher Education and/or Medical School environment will also be highly regarded.

About the Role

This is a newly created role reporting to the Director of Finance, MQ Health, where you will lead a team of direct reports and be responsible for end-to-end financial planning, analysis, and commercial finance business partnering across the MQ Health.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Financial Planning & Analysis: Lead and manage the FP&A team across budgeting, forecasting, 5-year projections, capital requirements, reporting, and performance analysis. Define and track KPIs, monitor performance, and identify risks, opportunities, and areas for cost optimisation.
  • Reporting & Data Excellence: Lead projects that enhance analytical quality and efficiency by partnering with IT, Business Intelligence, Finance, and business unit stakeholders to develop reporting and build robust analytical data sets. Ensure all reporting is accurate, timely, and aligned with stakeholder requirements.
  • Business Partnership & Strategic Support: Develop business cases, cost–benefit analyses, and financial models to guide Executive decision-making. Act as a trusted partner to senior leaders, translating complex financial data into actionable insights that support safe, efficient, and value-based patient care.
  • Commercial & Growth Focus: Analyse commercial drivers, identify growth opportunities, and lead initiatives that enhance strategy, profitability, commercial acumen, and operational efficiency.
  • Leadership & Culture: Inspire, develop, and lead a high-performing finance team. Drive capability, accountability, and a service-focused culture. Manage succession planning and team development to support future growth. Foster collaboration across MQ Health and the broader University finance community.

About Us

Group Finance provides a broad range of financial services to support Macquarie University's core mission of teaching and research, including its controlled entities such as MQ Health. The MQ Health Finance Team delivers planning, reporting, analysis, and business partnering activities specifically for MQ Health Pty Limited, while maintaining strong connections with the wider Finance function across Financial Shared Services, Financial Operations, University Financial Performance and Business Partnering, and Financial Control.

About You

You are a commercially astute and strategically minded finance leader who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to influence, partner, and drive outcomes in a complex hospital and health enterprise environment. You bring a genuine passion for developing high-performing teams and embedding a culture of accountability, service, and continuous improvement.

Selection Criteria

  • Senior commercial finance leadership in complex health environments: Significant, relevant experience (typically 8+ years) in a similar role within a large, complex organisation with complex accounting and reporting needs.
  • Strategic business partnering and stakeholder influence: Proven ability to build rapport, influence senior stakeholders, and manage multiple stakeholder relationships effectively.
  • Commercial acumen and decision support: Demonstrated ability to provide expert financial guidance and insights to leaders, analysing commercial drivers and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Financial planning, forecasting, and performance management: Capability to develop and critically evaluate long-term budgets and forecasts, and produce month-end analysis and insights for leadership.
  • Advanced financial modelling and scenario/cost-benefit analysis: Advanced modelling and scenario analysis skills, including ad hoc modelling and cost-benefit analyses for strategic initiatives.
  • Accounting fundamentals and governance mindset: Strong grasp of accounting principles and procedures with comfort operating within compliance and financial governance expectations.
  • Ability to drive outcomes and improvement: Evidence of driving enabling activities and projects with leaders to support service delivery model success, transformation, and change activities.
  • Professional qualification and technical toolkit: CA/CPA (or equivalent) plus strong Excel and PowerPoint capability for management information and executive-ready storytelling.
  • Highly Desirable: Experience in the health industry, systems implementation or upgrades, and understanding of health funding models, financial governance frameworks, and cost-of-care analysis.
  • Highly Desirable: Experience in a commercial role in a higher education medical school setting.
