Job Summary

UBC Facilities provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations, and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.

The Head Labourer, Moving Services, provides overall supervision, allocation, coordination, and organization of the Moving Services team, including Sub-Head Labourer(s), labourers, and workers engaged in campus moving operations. This position plans and oversees office relocations, event setups, and the movement of equipment, furniture, supplies, and materials, as well as provides project trades support, scaffolding planning and erection, and general site cleanup. The Head ensures that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of customer service, while promoting teamwork, employee development, and continuous improvement. The role also oversees the operation of equipment such as forklifts, crane trucks, dump trucks, and other related machinery required for assigned projects.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Manager, Municipal Services, the position supervises Labourers engaged in moving, delivery, and event support work.

The position works closely with other UBC Facilities groups, departments, and clients across campus to ensure effective service delivery.

Work Performed

1.     Provides overall supervision, coordination, and direction for the Moving Services team, including the Sub-Head Labourer, labourers, and other assigned staff engaged in moving, delivery, event setup, and related support activities across campus.

2.     Directly supervises and supports the Sub-Head Labourer, ensuring effective communication, delegation of tasks, and alignment with departmental goals and priorities.

3.     Plans, schedules, and oversees daily operations for the Moving Services crew, including office relocations, furniture and equipment moves, event setups, and general materials transport across campus.

4.     Assigns work based on service requests, priorities, and available resources to ensure efficient and timely completion.

5.     Organizes manpower, vehicles, and equipment such as trucks, dollies, lifts, and forklifts; ensures appropriate allocation to each job.

6.     Oversees and plans the erection, inspection, and safe dismantling of scaffolding systems as required for maintenance, access, or installation support activities.

7.     Conducts site visits, prepares cost and time estimates, and reviews job scopes and risk assessments prior to work commencement.

8.     Provides clear direction, guidance, and training to the Sub-Head Labourer and team members to ensure consistent, safe, and professional work practices.

9.     Promotes and enforces UBC safety standards, ensuring compliance with all regulations, safe lifting practices, PPE requirements, and vehicle operation procedures.

10.  Maintains communication with clients and internal stakeholders to confirm job details, resolve concerns, and ensure service satisfaction.

11.  Monitors job progress, provides on-site support, and addresses challenges to minimize disruption and maintain quality standards.

12.  Maintains accurate records of time, materials, equipment, and service requests; ensures data is entered and tracked through appropriate systems.

13.  Participates in performance management processes by setting expectations, monitoring performance, and providing constructive feedback to the Sub-Head and team members.

14.  Identifies and recommends process improvements to increase service efficiency, safety, and customer satisfaction.

15.  Participates in or performs moving-related duties as required.

16.  Performs other related duties as required and consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Consequence of Error / Judgement

This position exercises independent judgment and decision-making in planning and supervising daily operations. Poor judgment or errors could result in inefficient use of resources, service delays, damage to property, increased costs, or safety incidents affecting staff and the campus community.

Supervision Received

Works under general direction from the Manager, Municipal Services, following established departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards.

Supervision Given

Supervises and coordinates the work of Subhead and/or Laborers within the Moving Services team. Provides guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with UBC and departmental standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or equivalent.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in moving, logistics, or facilities operations, including at least one (1) year in a leadership or supervisory role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in institutional or large-scale moving operations.

  • Knowledge of safe lifting and moving techniques, load securing, and the operation of moving-related equipment and vehicles.

  • Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and support a diverse team.

  • Strong organizational and time management abilities; capable of prioritizing multiple tasks under pressure.

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, safety, and continuous improvement.

  • Proficiency with digital tools for scheduling, work order management, and reporting.

  • Ability to foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
