Your Opportunity:

Chewy is seeking a Hardware Engineer II to join our Fulfillment Center Design Engineering Team. In this role, you’ll be a key contributor in the design and execution of Chewy’s large-scale fulfillment and automation infrastructure. You’ll apply data-driven analysis, mechanical and electrical design skills, and vendor coordination to deliver world-class fulfillment centers that power Chewy’s continued growth.

You will design and execute capital projects supporting new sites, retrofits, and automation upgrades across facilities up to 1 million square feet, ensuring that material-handling systems, robotics cells, and process equipment are safe, reliable, and scalable.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop detailed engineering designs for new ecommerce fulfillment centers and retrofits, including AutoCAD layouts, power/data plans, and process flow documentation for core, pharmacy, and perishables business verticals.
  • Build Excel- and SQL-based models to analyze material flow, throughput, storage capacity, and labor requirements.
  • Create and tabulate Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and vendor bid comparisons; recommend solutions based on technical merit and cost.
  • Partner with vendors and internal teams to scope, design, and validate new fulfillment technologies such as conveyance, sortation, and robotic work cells.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for conveyance, automated packaging equipment, and robotics.
  • Ensure all designs meet Chewy’s safety, compliance, and reliability standards, incorporating maintainability and redundancy.
  • Participate in design reviews, cross-functional coordination, and installation planning alongside Operations, Maintenance, and Controls Engineering teams.
  • Author Capital Approval Requests (CARs) and project documentation for initiatives typically in the $500K–$2M+ range.
  • Document lessons learned and proposed process improvements to standardize designs and increase project velocity.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or related Engineering field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 3–6 years of experience in fulfillment, manufacturing, or automation system design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel modeling, and basic SQL/database tools.
  • Familiarity with material-handling and automation systems (conveyors, robotics, ASRS, or sortation).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to execute multiple high-priority projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel 25%+ to support site visits, vendor tests, and installations.

Bonus:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with WMS/WCS integration, Ignition, or ladder logic-based controls systems.
  • Experience developing automated e-commerce fulfillment infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize large operational data sets.
