Business Overview

We are seeking new members to support the intellectual property activities of the Rakuten Group Mobile Segment. With proactive expansion into overseas markets and development bases both domestically and internationally, we are not merely filing patent applications in foreign countries. Instead, we are building a global intellectual property team by establishing some IP bases overseas and comprising a multinational members. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, including IP departments of other companies, patent law firms, and patent search companies.

Given the characteristics of the segment, the executives have a high level of interest in intellectual property activities. As a result, we report directly to management, present at company-wide morning meetings, and actively communicate by disseminating various information externally.

Currently, we are in the process of building our intellectual property activities from scratch, which includes establishing a global patent and trademark filing scheme, developing internal workflows and systems, and setting up a company-wide IP review scheme. Furthermore, as the IP department of a company that is disrupting industry norms in telecommunication services, we are committed to business innovation by leveraging new technologies such as AI and are striving to build an original intellectual property management system, unconstrained by existing conventional practices.

Position Details

You will be responsible for one or more of the following:

＜IP Strategy Formulation/Initiative Promotion/Information Analysis＞

Formulation and promotion of company-wide patent filing strategies.

We form teams with strategic personnel from other segments, not just the Mobile Segment, to formulate IP strategies from a company-wide perspective.

-KPI Management

-Budget formulation

-IP information analysis (IP Landscaping, executive reports, etc.)

We are primarily looking for individuals with experience in corporate IP departments who wish to be involved in IP strategy formulation and information analysis for strategy development.

＜Global Patent Filing Scheme Construction＞

Construction and management of filing schemes for inventions generated from domestic and international development bases.

Management of patent law firms and promotion of cost reduction measures.

＜Project Promotion for IP-Related Issues＞
You will lead projects to resolve internal/departmental IP-related issues.
Below are examples of past/current projects:

Construction of a global filing system

Construction and operation of an IP review system for product launch processes

Construction of Open Source Software (OSS) compliance system

Development of IP regulations for overseas subsidiaries

Construction of Standard Essential Patent (SEP) management process

Implementation of new IP management system

Planning of education and training (new employee training, inventor training, departmental training, Open-source software training for development unit)

Even if you have no prior experience in the IP industry, we actively recruit individuals with experience in managing global projects.

＜Construction of Patent Filing Scheme Utilizing AI＞
Among business process transformations using AI, we are establishing processes related to patent filing. We are exploring new approaches beyond the existing invention discovery, filing processes.

We are looking for individuals with experience in patent filing who are interested in building new business processes utilizing AI and other technologies.

＜Overall Management / Manager Candidate＞
In addition to the areas mentioned above, IP planning is responsible for fields such as patent and trademark administration, accounting and budget management, and IP system management. We are recruiting managers who will oversee several of these areas across the board.

Work Environment

Intellectual Property Strategy Section, Strategic Business Compliance Support Department., Rakuten Group, Inc.
The entire department consists of just under 30 members, with most in their 20s and 30s, including some who are active as L5 managers. Most managers at L4 and above are in their 40s to 50s.

Mandatory Qualifications:

[IP Strategy / Initiative Execution / Intelligence & Analytics

• 3+ years of experience in a corporate IP department in patent prosecution or IP analytics

[Project Leadership for IP-Related issues]

• IP industry experience is not required

[Building AI-Enabled Patent filing & Prosecution Schemes]

• 3+ years of patent prosecution experience in a corporate IP department or at a patent law firm

[All Positions]

• TOEIC score of 800+ or business-level English proficiency (speaking and listening required)
• Business-level Japanese proficiency

Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to conduct discussions, create materials, and deliver presentations in English
• Experience managing projects requiring collaboration with other departments and overseas teams/sites
• Hands-on experience leading the design and implementation of business processes and systems
• Experience living in an English-speaking country and/or test score such as TOEFL, IELTS, or EIKEN are a plus
• 2nd grade Certified Specialist of Intellectual Property Management
