Graduate Assistant for Sports Performance

DEPARTMENT:  Athletics

BASIC FUNCTION:  Responsible for the usual and customary duties associated with assisting in the Strength and Conditioning of NCAA Division I Athletic Programs; responsible for knowledge and skills entailed in the sport being represented.      

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS:  Non-traditional work hours; possible extensive travel involved; potential exposure to blood borne pathogens.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED: 

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree required

EXPERIENCE:  Related coaching experience preferred

REPORTS TO:  Associate Athletic Director of Sports Performance

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.         Assists the Associate Director with the responsibility for a successful program.

            This involves:

  • overseeing the comprehensive training programs of 3-4 teams,

  • assist full-time staff with development and implementation of 1-2 additional teams

  • preparing the teams for practice and competitions on a weekly basis,

  • ensuring the rules compliance of the NCAA, Conference and the University with the assistance of the compliance Services on campus,

  • immediate reporting of suspected or confirmed rules violations.

2.         Assists in the planning of Sports Performance.  This involves:

  • Consistent & proactive communication with Sports Medicine staff,

  • weight room supervision as scheduled,

  • facility and equipment maintenance of Walsh Athletic Center weight room,

  • fueling center upkeep and ordering,

  • maintaining accurate files and documentation on the athletes as necessary.

 

3.         Assists in the completion of tasks that will allow the department to maintain their budget as allocated from the university

4.         Receives annual written approval from the Director of Athletics and the President prior to receiving any athletically related income and benefits from sources outside the institution including contractual agreements and letters of appointment.  Sources of income shall include but are not limited to:  income from annuities; sports camps; housing benefits (including preferential housing arrangements); country club memberships; complimentary ticket sales; television and radio programs; and endorsements or consultations with athletics shoe, apparel or equipment manufacturers.

5.         Participates in the professional development of the department.  This involves:

  • attending divisional and departmental gatherings and seminars to understand the University and its goals and objectives,

  • attending regular staff meetings,

  • monitoring developments in the NCAA and the Conference through attendance at workshops, seminars and related associations and organizations,

  • promoting an image of efficiency and courtesy throughout the community and the campus.

6.         Promotes safe and secure working conditions. This involves:

  • promoting proper utilization of equipment, materials, staff and athletes,

  • notifying the supervisor immediately of any unsafe conditions.

7.       Performs other related duties as required or dictated by responsibilities.

Compensation: The Graduate Assistant position is a two-year commitment beginning with the 2026-27 academic year and includes a tuition waiver of 9 graduate credit hours per term up to 36 total credit hours, graduate assistants will also be offered a $12,000 stipend each year.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or a related field and acceptance into a Fairfield University graduate program. SCCC or CSCS certification. First Aid/CPR/AED certification. Internship experience with a collegiate or professional sports program.
