Work Arrangement

This position is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to GM’s Warren Technical Center in Warren, Michigan at least three days per week.

The Role

The Business Planning Manager for GM Energy plays a critical, “chief-of-staff” style role supporting the Vice President of GM Energy. This role leads strategic planning and execution, manages high-impact projects and executive deliverables, shapes leadership communications and narratives, and provides insight into the sentiment and health of the organization and action items.

In addition, this position drives business planning, internal communications, culture and engagement transformation, and change management efforts. As a key contributor to GM Energy’s overall strategy, the Business Planning Manager ensures alignment, momentum, and timely execution of critical initiatives that support our short-, medium-, and long-term goals.

The Business Planning Manager is expected to consult with key stakeholders and GM Energy Leadership Team members and to collaborate closely with Business Planners across GM.

What You’ll Do

Strategic planning & enterprise alignment - Develop and lead the GM Energy business planning process, integrating inputs into a cohesive strategic enterprise plan. - Drive strategic alignment and execution for GM Energy, ensuring the VP’s priorities cascade into clear goals, KPIs/OKRs, and action plans across the organization. - Shape board- and executive-level narratives, creating decision frameworks, performance reporting, and strategic updates that guide senior leadership alignment.

Executive communications & leadership support - Lead the development of senior leadership messaging and content for strategic reviews, board updates, and enterprise forums. - Prepare high-quality presentations, speeches, and written communications on behalf of the VP and GM Energy leadership, tailored to diverse audiences. - Provide directional insight and recommendations to help leaders make informed decisions and to help employees accomplish goals and tasks.

Operating rhythm & leadership forums - Orchestrate GM Energy’s operating rhythms and leadership forums (e.g., staff meetings, strategic reviews, business updates), translating ambiguity into structured execution. - Develop and maintain leadership staff meeting agendas; coordinate and facilitate meeting arrangements; document decisions, minutes, and action items with clear follow-up. - Coordinate executive-level activities, assignments, and deliverables, including special projects, progress reports, and cross-functional reviews.

Culture, engagement & change - Lead or support business planning, internal communications, learning and development, and culture / Workplace of Choice initiatives for GM Energy. - Manage GM Energy-wide meetings and events (e.g., All People Meetings, Business Updates, special events), including content, logistics, and post-event communications. - Share feedback and insight on organizational sentiment, reinforcing a modern, meritocratic, and inclusive culture that aligns with GM’s Behaviors.

Cross-functional collaboration & special projects - Act as a primary point of contact for GM Energy with other GM functions and Business Planners, ensuring a timely and efficient flow of information and support. - Collaborate with the Global Safety Group and safety teams and support GM Energy’s safety and compliance initiatives. - Complete tasks and propose solutions to ambiguous or time-sensitive requests with minimal direction, leveraging sound judgment and structured problem solving. - Execute special projects and analyses as required, often of a confidential or highly visible nature. - Must be willing to travel as needed (up to 10%).

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 7+ years total experience in business planning, strategy, operations, or similar related roles.
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience leading or supporting strategic business initiatives.
  • Proven strategic thinker with effective interpersonal skills to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization, ensuring messages and communications are appropriately tailored to each audience.
  • Highly professional, organized, and self-directed self-starter with managerial courage to listen, provide clear direction and feedback, and constructively challenge leadership when needed.
  • Ability to synthesize complex and varied topics into clear, concise, and focused recommendations, presentations, and communications for different stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership, change management, and communications experience, with a track record of driving alignment and results in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong ability to influence without authority, working effectively in a matrixed organization and in alignment with our cultural behaviors.
  • Demonstrated strong written, oral, and PowerPoint communication skills, including experience building executive-level presentations.
  • Attentive to detail and precision, with a consistent record of high-quality, flawless execution under tight timelines.
  • Advanced proficiency with collaboration and productivity tools, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint/OneDrive, Glean, Copilot, MS Office Suite, and video conferencing platforms.
  • High integrity and proven ability to manage highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Prominent level of time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple simultaneous deliverables.
  • Prominent interpersonal skills to work effectively with, motivate, and elicit work from others at all levels.
  • Prominent level of analytical ability, where problems are often unusual and complex and require thoughtful and data-informed solutions.
  • Energetic, bright, hardworking, and enthusiastic; willing to offer opinions and judgments and to constructively challenge leadership.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge

  • Master’s Degree / MBA.
  • Experience with Power BI and AI tools/agents/workflows to support planning, reporting, and decision-making.
  • Prior experience in energy, infrastructure, or subscription/digital businesses, particularly in high-growth or transformation environments.
  • Demonstrated success in similar chief-of-staff or business planning roles supporting senior executives.
