Geomodeller – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) is seeking a geomodeller to support the Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) Program, a long-term, multi-stakeholder initiative focused on characterizing groundwater systems in oil sands regions of Alberta at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).
As the Geomodeller, you will be responsible for developing and updating 3D geological models of the shallow subsurface in oilsands-producing regions of Alberta and will work closely with a team of Quaternary and siliciclastics stratigraphers, surficial geologists, hydrogeologists, numerical modellers, and others to characterize groundwater systems. You may additionally support the multi-disciplinary and collaborative team developing the Geological Framework of Alberta (GFA) and other project-specific models at a variety of spatial resolutions throughout the province.
What your day-to-day will look like:
Provide geomodelling support to AGS’s OSM project team, with a focus on Neogene–Quaternary stratigraphy in the Athabasca and Cold Lake oil sands regions. Build and refine 3D Neogene–Quaternary geomodels for the North Athabasca Oil Sands sub-areas, based on stratigraphic picks and bedrock topography surfaces provided to you.
Perform quality control of stratigraphic picks and modelled surfaces in collaboration with Quaternary geologists and hydrogeologists, and export finalized geomodel outputs in required formats.
Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary project team to ensure geomodelling outputs align with OSM project objectives, timelines, and data standards.
Generate geomodel‑derived grids, cross‑sections, and figures to support OSM technical reports, including Neogene–Quaternary stratigraphy and groundwater resource evaluation reporting.
Maintain, update, and document OSM geomodelling work to ensure continuity for ongoing OSM deliverables.
Develop workflows and procedures for optimizing model construction and increasing efficiency of model updates.
Stay up to date on advances in 3D model algorithm development to ensure models are constructed as accurately as possible using the appropriate data-driven algorithm with an awareness of the implications that certain modelling techniques will have on the model results.
What we’re looking for in you:
Master’s degree in geology or geostatistics with 5–7 years of geomodelling or related industry/academic experience.
Experience building and maintaining 3D geological or geomodels, ideally for regional‑scale or applied groundwater studies.
Strong working knowledge of a variety of 3D modelling software packages (i.e., Leapfrog and/or Petrel) and 3D modelling algorithms used to create geological models for different geological intervals in western Canada.
Experience modeling shallow, complex stratigraphy, ideally with exposure to Neogene–Quaternary preglacial and glacial sediments, or similarly complex deeper stratigraphy.
Strong data management and database skills.
Demonstrated ability to work, contribute, collaborate and share knowledge in a multi-disciplinary project-based team environment.
Able to adapt to changing priorities and must be flexible and open to new ideas, with the ability to apply original thinking to resolve complex issues.
Mastery of interpersonal skills needed to prioritize tasks, deliver quality outputs, collaborate with others and demonstrate value of work to meet the needs of the AER and all Albertans.
Additional Information:
All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
This position requires the incumbent to work from either the Calgary Head Office or the Edmonton Regional Office in Alberta.
If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.
What we offer you:
Great benefits from your first day of work
Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours
