General Operative – Weighbridge & Mobile Plant Operations
Location: Abingdon
Salary: £35,000–£45,000 per annum
Are you practical, organised and safety‑focused? We’re looking for a reliable General Operative to play a key role in the day‑to‑day operation of our busy aggregates, asphalt and recycling depot in Abingdon. This is a varied, hands‑on role combining weighbridge, administration and mobile plant operation, with full training provided for the right person.
Purpose of the Role
You will support the safe and efficient movement of materials on and off site, ensuring customer requirements are met, transport is optimised, and all operations comply with company, legal and health & safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operate the weighbridge accurately in line with procedures and legal requirements
Organise lorry loading and collections for aggregates and asphalt
Produce computerised weight tickets and process cash sales correctly
Optimise transport movements to maximise loaded capacity
Answer telephone enquiries and direct calls appropriately
Welcome site visitors, ensure sign‑in compliance and direct them to the correct department
Carry out weighbridge and general office administration duties
Operate, inspect and maintain mobile plant safely and efficiently
Complete plant inspection checklists before, during and after use
Refuel and operate mobile plant in a safe manner
Ensure materials leaving site meet company quality standards
Communicate health and safety updates to hauliers and drivers
Report near misses and raise driver performance or training needs with the Unit Manager
Maintain clean, tidy and secure workstations and buildings
Work closely with other Weighbridge Clerks to ensure vehicle efficiency
