Job Summary: As a Lead AST, Aerospace Experimental Facilities and Test Technologies Engineer with the Wind Tunnel Test Branch you will be responsible for leading the work required to maintain and expand the capabilities of NASA's wind tunnel test facilities. You will serve as a technical lead for the test team, ensuring test facility operational readiness to support customer research by directing policies, procedures, schedules, resources, procurement and facility requirements.

Major Duties:

  • Organizes and directs mechanical and electrical engineering facility projects with the test team to ensure facility readiness and capabilities are maintained and enhanced.
  • Coordinates with facility test team to ensure that the facility can accommodate customer hardware and subsystems to ensure safe and efficient testing.
  • Briefs engineering issues and test facility status updates to the branch, division, and directorate levels of management.
  • Supports the Facility Managers in the test facilities areas and participates in workforce planning for the branch to ensure that resources and skill sets are available to support the continued test facilities operations.
  • Applies engineering knowledge and skill to lead team of engineers to troubleshoot facility infrastructure and test hardware problems.
  • Coordinates with the support service contractor management to ensure that skill and personnel to support facility operation and maintenance are met.
  • Provides oversight and management of test facility schedules, budgets, maintenance, operations, and labor.

Qualifications: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Providing technical engineering guidance or oversight of aerospace test facilities or other industrial facilities of similar scale and complexity; Leading multidisciplinary teams or projects in the planning and execution of aerospace testing or testing of similar scale and complexity; Communicating engineering and workforce successes and opportunities for management review or action.
