The Head of Wealth Legal is a senior management-level position responsible for accomplishing results through the management of a team of 100+ attorneys and legal professionals, directing day-to-day legal activities and provision of legal advisory services in coordination with the Legal Function. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal analysis, advice, guidance, and decision making within specific areas of expertise related to Citi’s Wealth and Retail Banking businesses, including Everyday Banking, Citi Priority, Citigold, Citigold Private Client and Citi Private Bank.  Wealth brings together the full power of Citi to serve the entire continuum of clients, from affluent to ultra-high net worth to family offices. Citi Wealth work with clients to build their wealth through expert investments insights and solutions and our deposits and lending platforms.

This role reports directly to the Global Head of Legal and will serve as an active member of the global Legal Management Council (LMC).  The role requires thorough understanding of the strategic direction of the Wealth businesses, including Retail Banking, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations for these businesses and the geographies in which we operate.  This role will be critical in partnering with the Wealth business as we continue to realize synergies between U.S. Retail Banking and Wealth businesses, integrating our Retail Banking business with our Citigold franchises in the U.S., putting us in a stronger position to grow our business with affluent clients and allowing for strategic decision-making about our investment priorities, footprint and client-acquisition efforts. 

This role supports in the development of medium- to long-term plans and functional strategies for the Wealth businesses as well as developing and executing the same for the Legal function itself.  Management and leadership responsibility for multiple teams, including people, budget, and planning.  Has authority to negotiate and make independent decisions on issues / activities that have critical impact or influence on company revenues, capital, and business operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Legal team for Wealth, providing support and guidance on all Legal-related matters affecting the Wealth businesses (including Retail Banking)
  • Play an active role in career development and people-related matters across Legal, including a direct role in talent review, promotion, ratings, and compensation
  • Serve as a strategic partner to Wealth senior leadership and a key advisor to business stakeholders, functional partners (e.g., Risk, Compliance) and peer Legal Management Council (LMC) members
  • Key contributor to overall strategy, establishing direction and planning for the needs of the Wealth Legal team; actively build, align and evolve the culture of One Legal and deliver the strategic priorities of risk reduction, innovation, connection and engagement
  • Anticipate, evaluate, and appropriately respond to developments in local and international laws and regulations that impact the businesses; assist the businesses in evolving to meet marketplace and client needs
  • Advise the Wealth businesses’ heads and leadership teams on legal issues and risk
  • Manage and coordinate external legal service provider relationships where appropriate
  • Manage outside counsel relationships and other legal suppliers
  • Provide solutions-oriented legal support and assistance to the Legal Department and the Wealth businesses in accordance with strategic business needs and applicable regulatory and legal requirements
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervising the activity of others and creating accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience and 10+ years' managerial experience (experience in an in-house legal role is preferred)
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills
  • Experience in working with regulators / regulatory bodies is preferred
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgement while managing complex subject matter and issues
  • Experience in managing a large, geographically spread team across multiple cultures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of multi-jurisdictional laws and practices
  • Excellent written, verbal, problem solving, analytical and presentation skills
  • Effective negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain effective relationships
  • Bar license in good standing to practice law

Education:

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent law degree

Primary Location Full Time Salary Range:

$250,000.00 - $500,000.00
