What you’ll contribute to
The General Counsel is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of the organisation’s legal function. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, timely, and commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters impacting the business. The General Counsel acts as a trusted advisor to management, safeguarding the organisation’s legal and regulatory compliance while enabling business objectives.
This is a full-time, permanent position based at Corporate Headquarters in Port Melbourne.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and develop a high-performing legal team, fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, ensuring capability to deliver complex legal advice across diverse areas of law.
Manage departmental budgets and financial plans, optimizing resources to deliver value and efficiency.
Legal Advisory & Legal Risk Management
Oversee the provision of detailed legal advice on corporate, commercial, regulatory, privacy, and other relevant matters.
Identify, assess, and manage legal risks to protect the organisation’s interests and reputation.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and governance frameworks.
Strategic Contribution
Partner with senior leadership to support strategic initiatives and transactions, including contract negotiations, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures.
Align legal priorities with business goals, ensuring the Legal function operates independently while contributing to Toyota’s broader objectives.
Company Secretarial Functions
Undertake certain company secretarial responsibilities, including supporting Board and committee processes; and ensuring compliance with corporate governance requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement
Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external advisors to facilitate effective legal support and legal risk management.

Admitted to practice law in Victoria with a minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience.
Proven track record in leading legal teams within complex corporate environments.
Strong knowledge of Australian corporate and commercial law, regulatory frameworks, and governance principles.
Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Strong understanding of business operations and its commercial drivers
