Gender and Sexual Violence Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant  

within the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office 

Anticipated start date: August 31st

Joining the Human Rights and Equity Office 

 

The GSV Peer to Peer (P2P) team is a part of the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office at Brock University. HRE is a resource for all Brock community members, which includes students, staff, and faculty. HRE addresses human rights, harassment, and discrimination that are connected to the Ontario Human Rights Code. For more information about the HRE office, applicants are encouraged to review the HRE website. HRE sees great value in the peer-to-peer leadership model and student advocacy regarding human rights, as student leadership creates a more inclusive, safer campus for everyone.  

Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education (GSVSE) is a key branch of HRE. GSVSE seeks one social media and marketing peer assistant to to support awareness, prevention, and education efforts related to gender and sexual violence (GSV) across the campus community. The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will plan, develop, and deliver consent and social justice social media content for the HRE and GSV teams. They will create posts, campaigns, and videos, conduct outreach to promote GSV and HRE, staff drop-in hours for peer support and referrals, liaise with partners, research GSV issues, and prepare marketing materials.  

The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will be offered a 35-week contract of 10-15 hrs/week from August 2026 through April 2027. The successful candidate is expected to be available for in-person program delivery (workshops and events) at the St. Catharines campus of Brock University. Some evenings and weekends will be required. The successful candidates will receive fulsome orientation and training including job expectations, understanding GSV in the context of Human Rights and Equity at Brock University, leadership development, community engagement, advocacy, as well as necessary information about Brock University. The team members will report to and work daily with the Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education Coordinator.  

 

Duties & Responsibilities  

  

The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will be involved in the following areas of work: 

Develop, Design and Manage Social Media 

  • Develop and execute a weekly optimal posting schedule (which will include posts about Workshop Series, Drop-In, events, and educational and awareness posts) with the Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education Coordinator for Instagram. 

  • Possess a strong mix of organizational skills, to ensure all internal GSV and HRE Team requests are executed and planned effectively, as well as creativity to ensure content is as engaging as possible.   

  • Engage in professional conversations in a professional manner. This includes when answering or directing incoming messages from various social media networks.   

  • Ensure SJC social media cover photos, pinned posts, profiles, etc. are always up to date.   

  • Meet with, as needed, the Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education Coordinator to discuss their social media goals and needs.  

  • Research, plan and execute, with the Gender and Sexual Violence Support and Education Coordinator, social media campaigns to increase followers, strengthen relationships with existing followers, or improve engagement.  

  • Utilize various technology to create social media content as required (Canva to design graphics, Instagram Reels etc.).   

  • Create and design engaging newsletters, banners and posters to promote and share upcoming HRE and GSV programming to the subscription list.  

  • Assist in the planning of promotional, marketing and awareness campaigns for GSV and HRE services, events, businesses, and governance efforts.   

  • Assists in development, execution, and tabulation of various data collection from students.   

  • Support marketing department in marketing preparation, including banner finishing, laminating, data entry, etc.   

 

Peer to Peer Support:  

  • Lead and support daily drop-in sessions by providing peer support from a non-judgmental, survivor-centred, anti-oppressive, intersectional, and trauma informed perspective.  

  • Serve as an initial point of contact for students impacted by gender-based and sexual violence, offering supportive listening, providing information about options, and facilitating warm referrals to HRE Advisors and other appropriate on- and off-campus resources. Student staff will be trained in emotional support skills and in effectively connecting students to professional supports.     

  • Provide resources and referrals relevant to specific student needs internal to the Brock community and external community agencies and partners  

  • Engage in trauma informed and survivor-centered approaches when connecting with students and community members  

  • Support our Peer Safer Walk program 

 

GSV Education and Event Planning  

  • Develop, update, and facilitate workshops for students to encourage enhanced capacity and awareness of GSV (minimum 1 workshop per term)  

  • Facilitate ongoing workshops through the GSV Certificate series: GSV, graduate student equity & inclusion series   

  • Facilitate Consent Training to a variety of student groups including students in residence, student clubs, student life programming, and other community groups  

  • Engage in ongoing reading and learning on relevant GSV research  

  • Envision, plan, and facilitate student focused events to enhance GSV awareness, support, and healing (minimum 1 event per month)  

  • Provide in person or online support for prominent HRE events (e.g., International Women’s Day, Black Student Symposium, Pride events, December 6)   

Programming Areas: 

  • Women Empowerment and Survivor centric Programming; 2S & LGBTQIA+ inclusion GSV Programming; Indigenous centered GSV Programming; Racialized student GSV Programming; International student GSV Programming; Anti-ableism GSV Programming; Men against Violence Programming 

 

Qualifications 

Experience: 

  • Understands gender and sexual violence and supports survivors 

  • Commitment to ending sexual violence as demonstrated through previous or current activist or voluntary work is strongly desired. 

  • Previous working/volunteering experience in the GSV field is appreciated but not required. Area of academic concentration is not a factor in this hiring.  

  • Preference will be given to individuals with lived experience as members of Indigenous, racialized, 2S & LGBTQIA+, and disabled communities, those who have experienced GSV, those with lived experience of sex work, or other marginalized communities.

  • Wednesday, September 2nd, 2026: 10 am – 4 pm 

  • Sunday, September 6th: All Day - Residence Consent Training 

  • Monday, September 7th: All Day - Residence Consent Training 

  • Monthly PD:  

  • Saturday, October 3, 2026: 10 am - 2 pm  

  • Saturday, November 14, 2026: 10 am - 2 pm  

  • Saturday, January 17, 2027: 10 am - 2 pm  

  • Saturday, February 6, 2027: 10 am - 2 pm  

  • Accountability for time worked will be implemented through the use of time sheets. All P2P staff need to fill out a Biweekly P2P report-sheet and discuss it with their supervisor to track the progress of the respective programming and to monitor their professional growth.
