Gas Sys Design Engineer

Job Summary

Provide technical expertise, guidance, and design support for the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of gas pipeline, measurement, regulation, and related facilities. This role partners closely with Engineering, Operations, and other internal stakeholders to deliver safe, compliant, and cost‑effective technical solutions aligned with company standards, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.

This role requires residence within 50 miles of a NiSource location in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania, with a preference for Chester, VA.

This position is part of a job family. Based on skills, experience, and qualifications, candidates may be hired as a Gas Systems Design Engineer I, II, III, or Senior. Final level placement will be determined during the selection process.

Essential Functions

  • Provide technical guidance, assistance, and training related to the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of gas pipeline, measurement, regulation, and related facilities and equipment.
  • Develop engineering designs, cost estimates, and construction drawings for pipeline, measurement, regulation, and transmission facilities.
  • Design small‑ and large‑scale facilities in compliance with company standards, industry standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Conduct field visits to evaluate site conditions and support project design and execution.
  • Support Engineering and Operations personnel during and outside of standard business hours, as needed, to troubleshoot equipment and material issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Prepare, maintain, and standardize engineering designs and drawings for regulation, measurement, and transmission facilities.
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to new and less experienced engineering personnel, as applicable by level.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external industry partners to ensure effective, consistent, and compliant technical solutions.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures; evaluate materials and equipment; monitor industry trends; and recommend value‑added technologies, tools, and planning practices.
  • Participate in special projects and studies related to cost analysis, facility design, workload and time studies, environmental considerations, facility failures, and class location requirements.
  • Maintain strong, customer‑focused working relationships with Engineering, Operations, and other internal partners by actively seeking and incorporating feedback.
  • Align individual objectives with department goals and corporate initiatives while considering operational impacts and budget constraints.
  • Attend required training sessions and relevant industry conferences to maintain technical proficiency.

Required Qualifications

Gas Systems Design Engineer I

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • 1+ year of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience using AutoCAD and PC‑based applications.
  • Demonstrated project coordination or project management capability.
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%–60% within the NiSource footprint, including consecutive weeks, based on business needs.
  • Valid, in‑state driver’s license upon hire.

Gas Systems Design Engineer II

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated practical application of AutoCAD and PC‑based applications.
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities.
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%–60% within the NiSource footprint, including consecutive weeks, based on business needs.
  • Valid, in‑state driver’s license upon hire.

Gas Systems Design Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience using AutoCAD and PC‑based applications.
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%–60% within the NiSource footprint, including consecutive weeks, based on business needs.
  • Valid, in‑state driver’s license upon hire.

Senior Gas Systems Design Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Completion of relevant coursework or training in measurement, regulation, and related equipment design (e.g., IGT, manufacturers, natural gas industry associations, higher‑education institutions, or company‑sponsored programs).
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience using AutoCAD and PC‑based applications.
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%–60% within the NiSource footprint, including consecutive weeks, based on business needs.
  • Valid, in‑state driver’s license upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Additional training or coursework in measurement, regulation, or related equipment design.
  • 4+ years of operational experience in Engineering, Pipeline, Regulation, Measurement, or Electronic systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Candidate located in or near Chester, VA.
This role requires residence within 50 miles of a NiSource location in Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania, with a preference for Chester, VA.

Salary Range*:

$96,600.00 - $144,900.00

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
