In this role, reporting to the Director, Gas and Power Trading, you will provide research and analytics to our power & gas trading team, focused on the Alberta and US Western power markets plus North American gas markets with a primary focus on Canada. You will use your strong technical skillset in building innovative solutions to analyze and model power & gas markets.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of analytical experience with demonstrated knowledge in the Alberta power and/or natural gas markets
  • A post-secondary education in Finance, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field
  • Experience performing market analysis, designing systems and tools, and analyzing and evaluating large, complex data files
  • Demonstrated proficiency with statistical tools, and programming skill. This includes knowledge of Python and Excel
  • An understanding of market fundamental analysis including supply fundamentals, demand trends and price formation
  • Proven ability to work independently on diverse, deadline-driven projects, demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong proficiency in economics, mathematics, and statistics

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a suite of quantitative and analytical models to facilitate trading decisions
  • Maintain, augment, and enhance the power team’s model and tool set on a regular basis
  • Research and monitor market fundamentals. Maintain a centralized system of key market drivers
  • Work closely with trading team to translate insight and analysis into actionable trading and asset optimization strategies
  • Provide analysis and research to various internal stakeholders as electricity market opportunities and projects develop for the company

Location and other Key Details:

  • This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Our business professional roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work
