This position reports to Enbridge Gas North Carolina’s Gastonia Operations Center in Gastonia, North Carolina.

What You Will Do:

  • Will primarily perform location of natural gas lines and facilities
  • Installs pipe in ditches
  • Manually digs around utilities
  • Pressure tests steel and plastic lines
  • Locates natural gas lines and facilities
  • Participates in the repair of third-party damage to natural gas lines and various types of natural gas leaks
  • Completes pipe maintenance activities
  • Safely drives a company vehicle
  • Sets up common Department of Transportation approved work sites and flagging traffic
  • Maintains truck inventory
  • Installs test charts

Duties are subject to change based on business need.

There is one position which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Who You Are:

Trainee-Gas - 0-6 months experience

Gas Operations & Maintenance Specialist I* - at least 12 months experience

*highest level an applicant can be hired

•    Knowledge and skill with common hand and power tools (i.e. shovel, screwdriver, pipe wrench, drill, Sawzall, etc.).
•    Ability to be fit tested for self-contained breathing apparatus equipment.
•    Effective communication and interpersonal skills for positive customer and contractor interactions are critical.
•    Ability to work as a team member within a diverse team.
•    Basic computer and internet navigation skills.
•    Availability for overtime and natural gas emergency response during the workday, as         well as in the evenings and some weekends when on-call.

Must be willing and able to meet a 45-minute emergency response time from the geographical center of the Gastonia area.  Emergency response time is a critical measure for Enbridge Gas North Carolina and candidates are required to consistently meet this requirement, including when on-call.

•    Occasional heavy lifting up to 80 lbs. independently.
•    Ability to adhere to safe working and driving procedures.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

•    6 – 12 months experience locating natural gas lines and facilities or other utilities.

•    Good mechanical aptitude.
•    Bilingual (Spanish) candidates.

Education Requirements

Completion of high school or equivalent (i.e., GED) is required.

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving history.

A valid Commercial Driver's License is strongly preferred OR must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment.

For Internal Use Only: The Enbridge title for this position is Gas Operations & Maintenance Technician I and it is associated with an E320 salary grade.

Other Working Conditions

Position works in a crew structure.

Work is performed primarily outside in varying weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.).

Locating duties require the ability to perform extensive walking, sometimes on uneven terrain. 

Position requires travel throughout the service territory with safe parking in a wide variety of situations and driving in construction zones.

May encounter agitated/irate customers.

Balancing, bending and stooping, climbing, crawling, carrying (up to 80 amount of pounds), grasping, kneeling, lifting (objects 80 pounds), pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement, grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 80 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement.

Ability to: understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions or other information, understand complex problems and collaborate/explore alternative solutions, organize thoughts and ideas into understandable terminology, organize and prioritize work schedule on a short-term basis, make decisions which have moderate impact on the immediate work unit and monitor impact outside this area, understand and follow basic instructions and guidelines, complete routine forms, compose letters, outlines, memoranda and basic reports and communicate with individuals via telephone.
