Gameplay Developer

AUS - Brisbane, Australia Full time
Gameplay Developer

Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Australia is seeking to recruit 2 x Gameplay Developers for our Commercial Pilot Training division to be based in a hybrid capacity in Brisbane.

We are open for Senior or Mid-level developers.

About the Role:

Recruiting 2 x Senior/Mid level Gameplay Developers to build high‑fidelity interactive training applications for commercial pilot training. In this role you will apply deep expertise in Unreal Engine 5 and modern software‑engineering practices to design, implement, and iterate gameplay systems that deliver realistic, performant experiences for engineers, pilots, and analysts. You will serve as the technical bridge between designers, artists, and simulation engineers, providing tools and workflows that enable rapid iteration in a highly regulated, safety‑critical environment.

Position Responsibilities

  • Prototype & R&D: Rapidly prototype interactive features (e.g., instrument panel controls, flight‑dynamics logic, fluid‑simulation effects) in C++/Blueprints; evaluate emerging Unreal Engine tools and third‑party libraries for aerospace use.
  • Gameplay‑Engineering Liaison: Translate aerospace requirements into robust gameplay systems and ensure seamless integration with the simulation pipeline.
  • Tool Support & Training: Build and maintain in‑engine editor extensions, custom data‑driven configuration panels, and debugging utilities; provide technical assistance to designers and engineers across desktop and VR/AR platforms.
  • Systems Architecture: Design modular, testable gameplay frameworks (input handling, state machines, AI, networking, physics) that scale with large‑scale environments and frequent content updates.
  • Workflow Optimization: Identify bottlenecks in code execution, asset streaming, and simulation loops; implement custom scripts, plugins, or off‑the‑shelf solutions to improve iteration speed and runtime efficiency.
  • Performance & Quality Assurance: Define and enforce coding standards, develop automated unit/functional tests, integrate CI/CD pipelines for builds and content, and conduct profiling/optimization (CPU/GPU, memory, LOD, streaming) to meet real‑time constraints on mobile devices, high‑end PCs and head‑mounted displays.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • 4 - 7+ years of professional experience as a gameplay/software engineer (or technical artist with strong programming focus) in a production environment.
  • Proven track record delivering high‑fidelity interactive content for games, aerospace, defence, or scientific‑visualization projects.
  • Expert proficiency in Unreal Engine 5 (C++, Blueprints, Gameplay Framework, Profiling tools).
  • Proven track record building complex gameplay systems: input, UI, physics, AI, and multiplayer/networked components for simulation or game projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to optimize performance for desktop and VR/AR platforms (memory management, LOD, texture streaming, multithreading).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; service‑oriented mindset for supporting cross‑disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills; comfortable working in Agile squads.
  • Ability to create runbooks and technical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Experience with flight‑simulation or pilot‑training systems.
  • Hands‑on work with VR/AR hardware and optimization techniques.
  • A proven track record of shipping at least one commercial game, demonstrating end‑to‑end development and successful launch.
  • Direct experience with flight‑simulation or pilot‑training domains, including knowledge of avionics, sensor modelling or general aerospace knowledge.
  • Familiarity with VR/AR or iOS development pipelines and performance constraints on mobile devices.
  • Background in regulated, safety‑critical environments (aerospace, automotive, medical).
  • Strong ability to influence cross-functional teams, drive operational outcomes, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Decision-making under pressure and ownership of platform reliability.
  • Business acumen to align operational decisions with product/service objectives.
  • Comfortable with Agile development practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, game development, or related field
