Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Milford, MI) three times (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.
Responsibilities
Join the Engine & Transmission Controls group as a Functional System Architect (FSA) in charge of understanding and defining functional system requirements and architectures in relation to Air Delivery, Exhaust Gas Estimation, EGR and more. As an FSA, you are the technical leader of large group of engineers to define all aspects of engine controls and diagnostic systems. You will provide mentoring, guidance to the Sub-System Lead Engineers work products within our team. You will be seen as one of the technical experts in ETC and thus mentor and develop the department’s knowledge of your space. Additional responsibilities include:
Own the Vision:
Develop and drive the requirements architectural vision and ART Solution context for your domain.
Define ART solutions, break down initiatives & capabilities into deliverables, and create ART features in Jira.
Champion the roll-down from FTS, STS, Initiative, and Product Team to create requirements architecture.
Ensure seamless integration of Air Delivery, Exhaust Gas Estimation, EGR, etc into the vehicle, including interfaces with other ARTs, hardware teams, advanced work teams, integration teams.
Act as the lead contact for the Engineering Pillar of the Product Team.
Define the ART functional architecture vision and collaborate with Product Team members.
Define the solution context, including supporting technologies, interfaces, APIs, and requirements.
Prioritize TFRP with the Systems Engineering organization and Product Team.
Pursue and support innovation opportunities within the domain.
Own the FMEA cross-functional linkage.
Work Cross-Functionally:
Directly support development scrum teams in the ICEPROP ART.
Work with the Product Team to ensure proper timing to TFRP and alignment to the epic process.
Capture customer-facing requirements, including emissions, NVH, performance, functionality, diagnostics, and remedial actions.
Safety & Regulation Focused:
Reference System Safety Hazard Analysis and partition safety hazard requirements to functions.
Comprehend applicable government regulations.
Define Functional Controls and Hardware Requirements:
Define functional requirements and map inputs to outputs.
Define remedial actions based on fault detection, propagation, and maturation.
Create context diagrams, functional architecture diagrams, and hardware integration of functions.
Develop acceptance criteria for new/modified features and ensure they are met prior to release.
Define function interface requirements, including aging, build variation, noise factors, and environmental factors.
Define how inputs to the function transform outputs, including latency, overshoot, and oscillation.
Define signal/data retention requirements and diagnostic, degraded state, remedial action, and recovery requirements.
Define use cases and measurable/objective performance requirements for normal and degraded states.
Support the hardware development cycle and hardware PMTs as new technologies are investigated and applied.
Support Creation of Engineering System Performance Requirements:
Support the creation of actuator and sensor functional and performance requirements (HW).
Define and support calibratable aspects of the function.
Lead System/Subsystem DFMEAs and participate in design-level DFMEAs.
Manage requirements utilizing GM requirements standard tool suites.
Disseminate and Support the Vision:
Guide the dispersion of requirements work with SSLEs in accordance with scrum responsibilities.
Lead, mentor, and coach SSLEs in developing requirements.
Provide technical direction and guidance to agile teams throughout all phases of ART processes.
Attend key ART and scrum meetings as part of agile software development.
Collaborate with the Product Team to review and update the backlog of work and determine technical feasibility.
Support the resolution of critical functional, regulatory, compliance, and customer satisfaction issues.
Required Skill and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in engineering
Minimum of 7 years of experience with Engine Controls Systems.
Minimum of 7 years of experience with Engine Integration.
Expert understanding of the physics related to related Engine Combustion and/or fluid dynamics.
High level of analytical problem-solving ability, including independent judgment and decision making skills, where problems are very ambiguous.
Ability to prioritize work with only limited direction from manager
High level of oral and written communication skills
High level of interpersonal styles and communication Skills to lead a large group of engineers and also work cross functionally for best results.
Experience with Requirements management tools (i.e. Doors, DNG, etc.)
Experience with Change management tools (i.e. Jira)
Background using simulation environments and Plant modeling for fault insertion analysis, testing, requirements generation (Matlab/Simulink, GMSIM, D-Space, ETAS, other)
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Masters or PHD in engineering with an emphasis on Controls or mechatronic Systems.
Experience with OBD regulations/requirements, and regional federal regulatory requirements.
Experience working in embedded controls/software organization
