Job Summary: This position is located in Virgin Islands National Park, in the Resource Managment Division.

Major Duties:

  • As a Biological Science Technician, you will perform the following duties: Implements natural resource management projects; follow instructions, standardized procedures, collect and organize files data. Ensures data quality and perform routine and recurring testing of samples. Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Assists in preparation of reports, plans, guidelines, research, summary of finding and prepare charts and graphs. Provides logistical support to contract or cooperating scientists, technical information, quality control. Solves logistical or operational problems. Installs, operates and maintains resource management equipment. Inventories equipment, evaluate quality assurance compliance and calibrate equipment. Compiles, reduces, stores, retrieves, analyzes and reports data. Provides information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program. Develops and present related interpretive programs to the public.

To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as Research activity or control program work; Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; and/or Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience. You must include hours per week worked. EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 6 months or half a year of graduate level education in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, such as in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, ecology or related disciplines appropriate to this position. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION of EXPERIENCE and EDUCATION: Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed post high school education semester hours of education (that are in excess of 120 semester hours) by 120. Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only post high school education in excess of more than four-years may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
