Freelance Engineering Manager C&D Retail

You are going to lead and hire engineers for a cross functional team that is transitioning towards a modern technology stack with technologies and tools like Node.js, React, Typescript, AWS, Serverless, GraphQL. What you are going to do

  • Hiring and retaining engineering talent: your role in hiring and retaining talent involves seeking out individuals who possess both technical competence and positive interpersonal skills. You strive to establish a safe and inclusive work environment. Additionally, you provide guidance and support to the engineers under your management, fostering their professional development and assisting them in advancing to new roles and opportunities

  • Remove impediments: it is your responsibility to ensure that team members have the resources and support they need to be successful. This includes identifying and removing any roadblocks they may encounter in their work. Additionally, you play a crucial role in resolving larger organizational issues and finding appropriate sponsors within the company to implement solutions generated by your team

  • Evangelize the empowered-product team vision: you play a key role in promoting the company's transformation into a technology-focused organization, creating high-quality digital products, and establishing empowered teams with a strong sense of ownership. You help spread the message and support these initiatives

  • Guide the team towards modern engineering and processes: you play a key role in guiding the engineers to prioritize automation, addressing technical debt, and phasing out legacy systems and processes. You help ensure that the team allocates time and resources towards these efforts

  • Keep-up being technical: it is crucial to maintain and enhance your technical skills. This can be achieved through various means such as self-study, attending conferences, collaborating on code projects with the team, facilitating technical sessions, and other creative methods of your choice

Who you are?

You have a wealth of experience in Agile environments, demonstrating exceptional skills in collaboration and continuous improvement. Additionally, you have:

  • 6+ years of experience as a software engineer

  • 3+ years of mentoring and managing expertise

  • Experience with web & app development including design, development and testing best practice

  • A talent for coaching and developing soft skills

  • An insatiable desire to help others grow and expand their knowledge

  • Flawless English language skills, both in speaking and writing

Who you will work with

As the Engineering Manager for the MijnNN team and the Onboarding & Authentication team, you will have the unique opportunity to lead two of the most innovative teams in the retail domain, consisting of circa 15 highly skilled engineers reporting directly to you. You will report to the Head of Retail at Customer & Digital and functionally to the C&D Lead Engineering Manager. But you'll also have the chance to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures in the larger IT community and leverage the larger NN Engineering community. Where do you work? 

The Customer & Digital (C&D) teams link the business units of Nationale-Nederlanden with our customers by managing all shared systems, platforms, capabilities, and service desks used to provide customer service. This includes the development and use of digital client portals, the app, chatbot technology, and expertise areas such as research, UX design, and data science across the company.
