Job Information

Job Summary:

Under general direction, the Foreman assists in performing, directing, and coordinating the day-to-day activities of Facilities Services’ Grounds Service Crew and Motor Pool. These activities include assisting in supervising employees, assigning, scheduling and planning work, conducting inspections to ensure quality of work, using appropriate computer systems, and effectively communicating with customers as well as Facilities Services’ staff and vendors. Assumes main supervisory duties when Manager is not present.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist managing the care and maintenance of grounds, athletic fields, campus landscape and horticultural features, snow removal, and labor crew.

  • Assist managing unionized staff. Entails assigning, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments (daily management and long-range planning), inspecting work for quality and completion.

  • Help onboarding new staff. Communicate staff issues to the manager. Coordinates emergency and urgent work schedules.

  • Understand the administrative processes of good management including Human Resources (mentoring; filing accident reports; organizing and directing continuous and consistent training programs for reporting staff; etc.)

  • Procurement and Inventory (ordering and stocking of materials, managing vendor relations).

  • Developing and using performance measurement tools to improve processes.

  • Effectively use and support Facilities’ policies and standard operating procedures.

  • Effectively use computer technology (computerized maintenance management system, desktop applications, etc.)

  • Provide knowledge and compliance with applicable federal, state, and city policies pertaining to construction practices, occupational safety, public health, and the environment.

  • Coordinate and cooperate with other Facilities Services’ staff on multi-shop work or reviewing major renovation projects.

  • Effective and timely communication, whether verbal or written, with customers, vendors, and Facilities Services’ staff.

  • Conduct regular inspection tours of buildings, equipment, and surrounding grounds for deficiencies, potential safety, health, or code problems and necessary repairs. Prepares written reports summarizing findings, and advises other building users, or others, as appropriate, of their findings, and recommendations for dealing with problems noticed in inspection. 

  • Respond to emergency calls at any hour of the day and work long or irregular periods when needed.

Additional Responsibilities

Education, Experience, or Certification:

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) from an accredited institution, required.

  • Completion of job-related apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training, preferred.

   Experience:

  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in ground maintenance and landscaping activities, including the use of pesticides required.

  • A minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience in the ground management industry is required.

Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass the University’s motor vehicle check required.

  • Valid Pesticide Applicator License-Illinois certification within the first six months of employment required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of modern grounds maintenance management techniques required.

  • Demonstrated understanding of landscaping and horticulture required.

  • Knowledge and understanding of operation and maintenance of grounds care equipment required.

  • Strong comprehensive management skills and techniques required.

  • Strong planning and scheduling skills required.

  • Customer service orientation required.

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with trades persons, professionals, faculty, students, staff, and administrators required.

  • Demonstrated ability to produce quality work at a fast pace and handle multiple tasks concurrently with excellent follow-up required.

  • Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills required.

  • Conscientious and knowledgeable of safety issues, needs, and concerns.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • The requirement is mobility and agility necessary to climb stairs and ladders, capable of high-altitude work, capable of working in restricted spaces, as well as the ability to work in extreme temperatures.

  • Must have mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
