Food & Beverage Manager

Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans. In 2025, PHA welcomed thousands of patrons as the building became a center for art and performance.

As PHA continues to welcome the public through its doors through expanded offerings, including events, exhibitions, fairs, public programs, performances, workshops, and retail, we are seeking an experienced and creative Food & Beverage Manager to lead the launch and daily operations of our on-site café and manage PHA’s broader hospitality program.

This role is responsible for ensuring an exceptional guest experience while actively and directly undertaking and managing all aspects of café and food operations (including alcohol), food and beverage inventory, and team management. This role reports to the Senior Vice President, supervises café staff, and manage relationships with external caterers, food providers, other local partners, and F&B consultants, while supporting PHA’s events, development and program teams on internal events. The ideal candidate will be able to balance managerial responsibilities with hands-on, proactive execution.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

PHA Café Buildout & Management:

  • In partnership with leadership and F&B consultants, build and launch the PHA Café in early 2026.
  • Once launched, run and manage the daily café operations, ensuring smooth service and high-quality customer service standards.
  • Manage food and beverage (including alcohol) inventory, ordering, and vendor relationships.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and F&B consultants on menu development, pricing, and strategic planning.
  • Manage café finances, including expense and sales projections, budget tracking, and regular reconciliation in partnership with the Finance team.
  • Manage equipment rentals, relationships with rental vendors, equipment maintenance plans.
  • Maintain compliance with DOH, and general health and safety, and licensing requirements.
  • Partner with VP of External Affairs & GC, and SVP on liquor license requirements; uphold standards and requirements to maintain appropriate licensing.
  • Take ownership of all hospitality coordination, including coordinating, scheduling, and overseeing all F+B deliveries and use of shared delivery and loading areas.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise café staff (including baristas, bar tenders, and other support team members). Hire additional staff as needed for events from a staffing pool to be built by this role, and/or staffing agencies.
  • Serve as café staff during times of staffing shortages, as necessary, and occasionally as event bartender for small-scale events.

Hospitality Program:

  • Plan and execute, in collaboration with leadership, development and programming teams PHA-hosted events.
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders on all hospitality needs and provide F+B services for the following organizational needs:
    • Venue rental sales team and clients – coordinating F&B services for events, execute and supervise bar / liquor service for rental clients, as needed.
    • Development team – supporting annual benefit, fundraising, and donor cultivation events. Acts as liaison for in-kind F+B event contributions from external partners.
    • Public programming – coordinating F+B services for public programs including events, exhibitions, fairs, public programs, performances and workshops.
    • External caterers – managing relationships and ensuring consistent service standards.
    • Develop strong, lasting relationships that lead to pipeline opportunities in collaboration with the Venue Rental team.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of experience in hospitality management, food and beverage, nightlife, preferably in a café, hotel, art or cultural venue, or multi-use venue environment.
  • Strong financial acumen, including forecasting, budget management, and reconciliations in partnership with finance team.
  • Strong leadership experience, with the ability to build and manage high performing hospitality team.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to problem solve in real-time and maintain professionalism under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across diverse teams and partners.
  • Creative approach to menu design and guest experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOH regulations, health and safety compliance and licensing requirements.
  • NYC DOH Food Protection and   Alcohol Training and Awareness Program (ATAP) certification.

Compensation & Benefits:Salary range is $70,000-$80,000 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a Citibike membership.
