PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Aurora seeks a spark plug to ignite our fitness programs. Staff management here feels like coaching a championship team. The City of Aurora is seeking highly motivated and talented individual for a career in the Recreation Division. The Program Supervisor of Fitness and Wellness programs will oversee a variety of fitness programs and operations across multiple centers ensuring quality customer service.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct supervision of full time fitness staff & oversee part time fitness staff
  • Oversee City of Aurora's fitness programs for various ages, fitness operations and martial arts at recreation centers.
  • Manage Operations, developing standard operation procedures, maintenance of fitness equipment and facilities, purchases, payroll, budget, manages revenue/expenses closely for strong financial performance.
  • Responsible for personnel decisions on selection hiring, training, evaluation and developing assigned employees; monitors status of required licenses and certifications.
  • Maintain communications and effective working relationships with employees, vendors, contractors, community organizations, and the public. Effective communication with programs and departments utilizing the facilities.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of fitness / recreational services.
  • Provide marketing information concerning fitness programs and operations; respond to customer questions, concerns and resolve complaints as needed to deliver quality customer service.
  • Develop and enforce necessary precautions to assure public safety; inspect facilities and equipment for safety and maintenance needs.
  • Web site contact contributor. Updates city website content regularly.
  • Evaluate programs for effectiveness, viability and public interest; modify programming to meet community needs.
  • Serves as a liaison and resource for community agencies and other organizations; performs community outreach to promote recreational programs and stimulate interest in Recreation offerings.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, exercise science or a field related


Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience progressively responsible experience in recreation / fitness field
  • At least three years of supervisory experience

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of recreation / fitness program development and administration.
  • Up to date knowledge on fitness programming, operations and trends.
  • Fitness certifications

Skills: 

  • Strong interpersonal and managerial skills
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to teach multiple formats of fitness classes
  • Mentoring ability to fitness staff

Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens and community businesses
  • Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Coordinate, schedule, and instruct recreation fitness programs
  • coordinate and oversee the work of others

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor from accredited institution
  • 1st Aid/CPR/AED certification

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential Personnel:

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical work
  • Maintain physical condition necessary to stand and walk for extended period
  • Standing, walking, bending, and stooping
  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system
  • Vision to read reports and other written material
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Requires frequent standing and walking
  • Ability to teach multiple fitness classes with a day

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions

Equipment Used:

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel.
  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
  • Fitness equipment and accessories.

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
