Major Duties:

  • Serves as the Applied Mental Skills and Cognitive Performance Program Manager for Semper Fit / Warrior Athlete Readiness and Resilience (WARR), Marine and Family Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Headquarters Marine Corps. This position supports the Marine Corps Total Fitness efforts. This position will develop and oversee the applied mental skills / performance psychology and cognitive skills program for Semper Fit/WARR and the Marine Corps. Responsible for developing policy and programming that will optimize readiness, lethality, and resilience for Marines, units, and their families. Develop standardized program framework and educational content for the WARR Applied Mental Skills Coaches/Consultants, Performance Psychologists, and supporting Force Fitness Instructors (FFI). Work closely with all members of the WARR team to ensure integrated program delivery, resource management, infrastructure development, and policy design for all areas of health, wellness, prevention, and performance. Establish protocols and policies that align with the Association of Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) and the American Psychology Association (APA). Inspects and ensures safeguards for sensitive information and prevents unauthorized reading, printing, retaining, copying, or dissemination of information, messages, or correspondence in accordance with rules and regulations such as those covered by the Privacy Act, 5 USC 552(a), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Public Law 104-191, and DoD Directive 6025.18. This position supports all domains of MCTF ¿ physical, mental, spiritual, and social. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES Create and implement training sessions protocols for coaches and administration, to develop mental performance skills. Creates learning objectives and plans and updates current curriculum related to applied mental skills, mental toughness, and job or sports performance. Implements and ensures appropriate sport or performance psychology methods are adhered to. PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS AND POLICY Develops organizational policy and procedures for the Marine Corps Semper Fit/WARR Applied Mental Skills and Cognitive Performance programs. This program coordinates, develops, and collaborates with a diverse range of subject matters experts from government agencies, services, and healthcare providers to support Marine Corps installations. Responsible for making routine decisions and judgment calls and may assist or make recommendations regarding complex or impactful decisions. Develops and designs promotional and campaign materials based upon the dimensions of Performance Psychology. Work with other program specialist and installation level performance psychologists and program directors on the delivery of unit and community education, and implementation of other services such applied mental skills and drills using a diverse inventory of up-to-date technological resources. This is a white-collar position where occasional lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. May travel to complete work assignments. May perform other duties as assigned. May work a fluctuating work schedule and travel to support other programs such as All Marine Sports outside of the typical work week and work hours. Valid Driver¿s license is required. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Semper Fit Director

Qualifications: Master¿s degree or higher preferred in Sports or Performance Psychology or closely related field with experience working with competitive athletes and teams. Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) from the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) is required if no PhD in Sport/Performance Psychology is possessed. Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and ability in the following areas: Five years of experience working as a sports/performance psychologist/mental skills consultant in collegiate and/or professional athletics, and/or military service member preferred. Experience delivering applied mental skills and cognitive performance programming in collegiate or professional athletics. Experience delivering applied mental skills and cognitive performance programming with military service member, units, and teams. Experience with developing organizational policy and procedures. Experience creating training and educational programming. Expert knowledge of applied mental skills / performance psychology concepts and skills. Proficient in interventions and areas of focus that include mental, life, and self-regulatory skills to optimize their performance. College or Professional athletic playing experience preferred. Skill with public speaking and briefing executive level leadership. Experience applying psychological approaches to injury management. Experience using biofeedback systems. Ability to work with a broad cross-section of human performance subject matter experts and handle multiple priorities. Ability to use technology in mental skills and cognitive performance training. Address performance psychological aspects of the impacts of injury, illness, recovery, and supplementation on performance. Experience implementing and executing a budget for institutional programs is desired. The ability to articulate an understanding of the health literacy needs of the population related to physical recovery, injury prevention, and stress management.
