Job Summary: This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Senate Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Facilities Operations Division, Fire Electronics Branch. The incumbent is a full performance level Fire Protection Equipment Mechanic Worker who performs fire protection servicing work.

Major Duties:

  • This is an Essential-Employee Position. The employee will be required to report to work during emergencies AND inclement weather situations. Work schedule may require some occasionally mandatory overtime on holidays AND weekends. Responsibilities: The incumbent performs mechanical work servicing fire protection equipment and assists the Electronic Mechanics in electrical work on fire protection systems. Inspects 1200-plus portable fire extinguishers located in buildings, parking lots and police vehicles. Inspects all Portable Extinguishers by checking tamper seals, checking horns and hoses for stoppage, and checking weight of extinguishers every six months (if the extinguisher is underweight or damaged, send out to be repaired or replaced). Prepares a detailed record of information on each extinguisher in order to assure all equipment is being maintained in a current and operable condition. Provides testing and inspection services on wet and dry chemical kitchen extinguishing systems, ensuring compliance with NFPA guidelines. Checks all fire alarm systems and informing the Electronics Mechanics if trouble is found with the systems and making sure it is corrected. As instructed by the Supervisor, upon receiving notification of an alarm, locates the detector for the U.S. Capitol Police and determines if the signal is an actual fire, a false alarm, or the result of malfunctioning equipment. Notifies the supervisor of the systems that are out of service. Notifies the supervisor of systems that are temporarily out of service so that the police department can be notified. Assists higher grade Electronics Mechanics in maintaining, repairing, adjusting and calibrating components and assemblies of the various systems or other systems that may be assigned. Operates various hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, and nut-driver to assist in the installation and repair of fire protection equipment. Follows applicable safety rules in the performance of duties. Attends safety classes to reinforce the awareness in safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.
