To be considered for the Fire Fighter Assignment Trainee position:

3. After creating your Public Safety Answers account, log in and complete the written exam on the website.
4. Call the Public Safety Academy at 791-4701 to schedule a date/time for ONE CPAT Orientation (this is not mandatory) but is highly encouraged. If you choose to forgo this you will have to sign a waiver stating you willingly did not attend.
5. We will accept valid CPAT cards obtained between October 1, 2025 - March 22, 2026.

Posting will open on January 2, 2026 and close on January 31, 2026.

Save the dates:
CPAT Orientation will commence on January 10, 2026 and January 31, 2026.
CPAT practices by invite only will occur between February 13, 2026 - March 15, 2026.
CPAT final will occur between March 20, 2026 - March 22, 2026.
Intern Orientation by invite only will be sent to all who passed CPAT by March 23, 2026.
Intern Orientation dates will occur on April 11, 2026 - April 12, 2026 and April 18, 2026 - April 19, 2026. This is one weekend, two consecutive days, portion of the test.
Hiring interviews by invite only will be in May 2026.
Final offers will be sent in June 2026.
The Academy will begin in July 2026.

Have a valid unrestricted driver's license for at least 2 years as of May 12, 2026

ABOUT THIS JOB

Duties and Responsibilities
This classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on department needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Demonstrates fire suppression competencies by safely operating modern firefighting tools and equipment, recognizing fire behaviors, and building construction factors, and applying appropriate suppression tactics in accordance with departmental SOPs and nationally recognized standards. 

  • Applies risk-based decisions making to identify, isolate, and mitigate hazards during emergency and non-emergency incidents. 

  • Performs core firefighting skills through regular drills and live or simulated training evolutions, demonstrates proficiency in hose deployment, water supply, ventilation, forcible entry, search and rescue, and exposure protection. 

  • Conducts patient assessments and provides emergency medical care at the first responder level by utilizing evidence-based protocols, effective communication, and scenario-based practices in both classroom and field training settings. 

  • Inspects, operates, and maintains fire apparatus and equipment before, during, and after training evolutions to ensure operational readiness and safety. 

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
