The MSD Electron Microscopy (EM) business designs, manufactures, and supports the broadest range of high-performance microscopy workflow solutions that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales.
As a Field Service Engineer II, you will independently perform installation, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated analytical and electron microscopy equipment. Working with advanced technology, you will provide high-quality technical service and support to customers across research institutions, universities, and industrial facilities.
In this role, you will troubleshoot complex system issues, conduct preventive maintenance, and ensure systems operate at peak performance. You will build strong customer relationships while collaborating with internal engineering, product, and service teams to continuously improve service delivery and system reliability.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct on-site installation, repair, calibration, testing, and maintenance of electron microscopy systems, including:
Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electronic, vacuum, and software-related system issues.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maintain system performance and reliability.
Serve as a primary technical resource for assigned customers and territory.
Develop and maintain positive working relationships with customers, system users, and internal teams.
Provide technical support to customers and assist other field service engineers with troubleshooting activities.
Travel frequently to customer sites, sometimes on short notice, to resolve service issues.
Submit detailed field service reports and maintain accurate service documentation.
Provide customer training on system operation, maintenance, and best practices.
Ensure compliance with safety procedures and quality standards in laboratory and industrial environments.
Provide feedback to product quality, engineering, and service teams regarding system performance and improvement opportunities.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical field OR equivalent combination of education and technical experience
3+ years of hands-on technical experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex analytical instrumentation such as SEM, TEM, FIB, or similar systems.
Experience diagnosing and repairing ultra-high vacuum systems and high voltage equipment.
Valid driver’s license required.
Ability to travel up to 75% within assigned territory.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in laboratory environments.
Proficiency in English required, additional languages beneficial.
Strong electronics and mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose issues to the component level.
Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, electrical schematics, and system diagrams.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and service management software.
Ability to effectively train customers on equipment operation and maintenance.
