Field Applications Scientist, Italy (Milan): 1-Year FTC
Field Based with 70% travel across Italy

As a Field Applications Scientist (FAS) here at Illumina in Milan, you will enable customer success across Italy by providing expert technical training, troubleshooting, and scientific consultation throughout the customer journey. You will act as a trusted advisor during both pre‑ and post‑sales engagements, working closely with our broader commercial teams to drive customer satisfaction and support growth. As the primary technical contact in the field, you will build strong partnerships with customers by supporting new installations, delivering comprehensive training, and guiding customers to achieve optimal performance with Illumina technologies. Your work will directly contribute to our mission of improving human health by unlocking the power of the genome.
This is a fixed term contract position for 12 months, based in Milan, Italy. Fluency in Italian and English is essential, alongside the ability to travel extensively (up to 70%) across Italy. It is essential for the role to have a valid driving license.

You will bring a strong scientific background, with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field, along with experience in laboratory‑based technologies such as genotyping or sequencing. Responsibilities
- Coordinating new installations, including facility inspections, instrument validation, and customer training.
- Reviews and approves operational quality of equipment, and instruct customers in operations and maintenance of system
- Troubleshooting issues related to user's technical skills, biochemistry/assay design, experimental design, software and instruments.
- Interprets customer needs and identifies if the responsibility for a problem resolution falls to sales personnel, engineering, or other company personnel
- Developing and maintaining positive relationships with customers in assigned territory
- Helping to maintain and increase product usage, and supporting key account and strategic sales efforts through technical presentations and demonstrations
- Provides strategic and competitive feedback to Marketing and product development teams, and independently leads or manages beta tests at customer sites
- Developing and improving key company processes that support our mission of building a world-class customer support organization
- Elevation process management as a FAS you are responsible for elevating application issues with customers instruments, customer issues and any kit issues
Requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics or related field, with some related experience. MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Genetics is an advantage
- Some biotech experience preferred
- Must be willing to travel up to 70% in Italy to visit customers (and occasionally across Europe for training)
- Fluent language skills in both Italian and English
- Experience using Genotyping and Sequencing technologies preferred
- Experience in clinical NGS applications is preferred
- Experience in bioinformatics data analysis in the genome sciences is preferred
- Demonstrated problem solving and interpersonal and account management skills in a commercial environment
- Demonstrable ability to independently work on highly complex problems requiring analysis of multiple variables
- Use independent judgment in developing methods, techniques or evaluation criteria for obtaining results
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication and training skills
- Clear vision of and commitment to providing outstanding customer service
- Fluent English and Italian language essential
- Driving license essential
