Position Summary:

The Division of Research at Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Facility Manager in Jupiter, FL.

The Facility Manager oversees the daily operations of the research animal facilities, ensuring efficient facility performance, regulatory compliance, and high standards of animal care and sanitation. Responsible for supervising staff, managing facility infrastructure and equipment, maintaining environmental conditions, and coordinating with internal teams and external vendors to support research activities.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Facility Operations & Oversight:

  • Responsible for daily operations of multicampus animal facilities, ensuring proper animal housing and care, facility operational systems, supplies, staffing, and support services in accordance with organizational policies, federal regulations, and management guidance.

Equipment & Maintenance Management:

  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules for equipment and transport vehicles, initiating repairs if necessary and keeping repair and performance records.

  • Coordinate with engineering, maintenance, and vendors during repairs, outages, and facility improvements.

Staff Supervision & Training:

  • Supervise technicians, support staff, and student workers to ensure proper preparation and care of animals for research in accordance with established protocols, animal care standards, and ethical guidelines.

  • Responsible for performance management of direct reports and supporting staff development, including preparation for AALAS certification. In coordination with the Assistant Director of Training, implement staff training plans to ensure proficiency in animal handling, husbandry, sanitation procedures, recordkeeping, and applicable safety protocols.

Compliance & Regulatory Support:

  • Ensure compliance with institutional SOPs and applicable regulatory standards (e.g., AAALAC, USDA, NIH, OLAW, IACUC).

  • Managing SciShield, the EHS research managing platform. Including but not limited to keeping staff current on required training and occupational health requirements, changing chemical and biological hazards as needed, submitting monthly self-inspections, and correcting evolving animal exposure.

  • Meeting with the Industrial Hygienist for the regular scheduled site visits of all vivaria and independently managing the compliance with safety regulations in the animal facilities, including corrections of noted deficiencies.

  • Maintain accurate and complete facility records, including sanitation logs, maintenance reports, and documentation related to operations, animal populations, inspections, and regulatory compliance.

  • Support internal and external audits and inspections.

Inventory & Resource Management:

  • Manages inventory and assists the Director by coordinating with vendors and the Purchasing Department to place animal, drug, and supply orders; support procurement activities such as negotiating pricing agreements for equipment, supplies, and office equipment maintenance in accordance with established guidelines and establish purchase orders.

Administration, Communication, & Coordination:

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for facility-related issues. Communicates effectively with research staff, veterinary staff, and facility personnel. Acts on behalf of the Director of Operations during their absence.

  • Acts as the Business Manager for the Comparative Medicine (CM) and is responsible for the administrative support to the Director of Comparative Medicine and the Division.

  • Assists with invoicing, document preparation and transmittal while maintaining records of financial transactions. Invoices CM for animal husbandry, drugs, supplies, and services using the CM-specific database and Workday.

  • Works with the Student Financial Aid office to employ Student Workers for CM.

  • Ensures accuracy and archiving of all relevant administrative and regulatory records.

  • Executes special studies or project preparations in accordance with the Director or AV.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience.

Pursuant to Fla.Stat.112.219, work experience may serve in lieu of a degree requirement, but may not substitute for any required licensure, certification or registration required for the position.

Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field.

AALAS, ALAT certification.

Valid driver's license required.

Salary:

$65,000 - $70,000 annually.
