The HVAC-R Technician IV is a senior-level technical specialist responsible for the advanced operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems. This position serves as a subject matter expert (SME) for HVAC-R and central plant systems, supporting mission-critical operations through technical leadership, independent problem-solving, and mentorship of other technicians.
- Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of complex HVAC-R systems, including air handling units, chillers, boilers, cooling towers, exhaust systems, refrigeration equipment, and associated electrical and control systems.
- Lead preventive and predictive maintenance activities for HVAC-R and central plant assets to ensure reliability, efficiency, and compliance.
- Serve as the technical authority for complex HVAC-R troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and system optimization.
- Interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, P&IDs, control sequences, and commissioning documentation.
- Support installation, modification, testing, and commissioning of HVAC-R systems in coordination with Engineering and Facilities teams.
- Act as the technical liaison for HVAC-R contractors and vendors, including scope development, oversight, and quality verification.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and on-the-job training to Technicians I–III.
- Accurately document maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs in the CMMS.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to HVAC-R related emergencies as required.
-Requires a minimum of 4 - 6 years of related experience.
- Extensive experience as an HVAC-R technician in a commercial, industrial, or mission-critical environment.
- Expert-level knowledge of HVAC-R systems, central plant operations, and associated electrical and control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to respond to after-hours calls.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
- Advanced experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC controls.
- Experience working in regulated, GMP, life-science, manufacturing, or mission-critical environments.
- Completion of a formal HVAC-R apprenticeship or advanced trade certification.
- Experience supporting capital projects, system retrofits, or equipment commissioning.

The estimated base hourly range for the Facilities Technician 4 - HVAC/Refrigeration role based in the United States of America is: $32.88 - $49.32. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role. Most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity.
