Job Description
 

Position Summary:

Gilead Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Facilities Engineer to join our Facilities Site Operations team in Foster City, CA. This role is responsible for the reliable and efficient operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of site utility systems - including HVAC, water systems, electrical distribution, and other critical infrastructure - while ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory standards, building codes, and company policies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of mission-critical facilities, laboratory, and pharmaceutical manufacturing environments and the unique demands placed on utility infrastructure within this sector.

Key Responsibilities

Facility & Utility Management

  • Oversee system performance and capacity of site utilities, including HVAC, RODI, PW, WFI, bulk inert gas, heating/chilled water, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Support maintenance and EH&S to ensure utility systems operate within validated parameters and comply with cGMP, FDA regulations, and company safety & quality standards.
  • Ensure system ownership by making certain all required work is completed and compliance is maintained, without necessarily performing every task directly.
  • Be available for on-call support as needed to address utility system issues.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to utility system operation, maintenance, deviations, and change controls.
  • Collaborate on the development, review, and update of SOPs, work instructions, and maintenance schedules for utility systems based on condition-based maintenance data.
  • Participate in audits and inspections by regulatory agencies and internal quality teams.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote a safe working environment.

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

  • Lead and/or participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of utility system failures; implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Coordinate and ensure completion of deviation investigations and change control records for assigned assets, including root cause analysis, impact assessments, and all required documentation.
  • Provide technical support and training for operations and maintenance personnel.

Project Management & Collaboration

  • Manage small to medium projects related to utility systems as assigned; provide technical input and may coach/mentor junior engineers/technicians.
  • Participate in commissioning and qualification of new or modified utility systems (consulted on project design/installation as needed).
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Facilities.

Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor overall system performance and consumption; identify and implement opportunities for predictive maintenance, energy efficiency, cost reduction, and continuous improvement in reliability and operational efficiency.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in operation and maintenance of HVAC and utility systems, preferably within mission-critical facility, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industry.

OR

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline with at least 3 years of experience in operation and maintenance of HVAC and utility systems, preferably within mission-critical facility, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industry.
  • Strong knowledge of cGMP regulations and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC, water purification, bulk inert gas systems, heating, chilled water, and electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS) and other automation platforms.
  • Experience in developing and executing maintenance procedures and schedules.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex utility system issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
  • Experience with commissioning, qualification, and validation of utility systems.
  • Experience leading deviation investigation, root cause analysis, with strong technical writing for quality records.
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance strategies, lean manufacturing principles, and continuous improvement methodologies, resolving issues identified through fault detection and diagnostics (FDD).
