Job Overview

The Exhibitions and Public Engagement Manager of the Georgetown University Art Galleries is a full-time staff position in the Department of Art and Art History, which includes three gallery spaces, undergraduate majors in Studio Art and Art History, and the Masters in Art and Museum Studies program.

The Exhibitions & Public Engagement Manager provides administrative and logistical support to the Director & Chief Curator, overseeing expenses, procurement, contracts, and professional correspondence while supervising interns and student workers. This role coordinates, plans, and executes public programs, special events, and outreach initiatives, including developing social media strategies and marketing efforts to promote exhibitions and foster community engagement.

This position oversees key aspects of exhibition planning and production, including artwork shipping, insurance, installation management, facilities coordination, and interpretive materials. They help to ensure the safe and effective presentation of artwork across three gallery spaces: the Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery and the two Lucille M. and Richard F.X. Spagnuolo Art Galleries.

They will develop and maintain productive relationships within the campus and local communities (including students, alumni, donors, staff and faculty), with artists and art world professionals, and with current and prospective donors and advisory board members. Some evening work and occasional weekend work is required. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide administrative support to the Director & Chief Curator in managing the Maria & Alberto de la Cruz Art Gallery and the two Spagnuolo Art Gallery spaces.

  • Coordinate all aspects of exhibition production, including loan and insurance paperwork, budget tracking, shipping logistics, installation and de-installation oversight, and procurement of services and products from external vendors.

  • Coordinate advertising efforts for exhibitions and programs across traditional and digital platforms.

  • Plan and produce public programs (lectures, panels, opening receptions, workshops, performances), class visits (GU and K-12 partners), and private functions (advisory board meetings, space rentals). This will include collaborating with other departments within the university and with a variety of outside stakeholders and suppliers.

Work Interactions

The Exhibitions and Public Engagement Manager will be expected to develop and maintain productive relationships within the campus and local communities (including students, alumni, donors, staff and faculty), with artists and art world professionals, and with current and prospective donors and advisory board members. Some evening work and occasional weekend work is required.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Art History, Arts Administration, Studio Art, or Museum Studies preferred). MA preferred.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in exhibition planning, project management, preparation of professional art exhibitions or related museum/gallery work.

  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills with attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse constituencies.

  • Familiarity with trends in global contemporary art including artists, institutions, dealers, service providers, and collectors; an existing network of professional contacts in these categories is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and work independently and collaboratively as a team

  • Experience planning and marketing public programs preferred.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, email marketing platforms, and social media platforms. Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress preferred.

  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend programs.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$21.16 - $35.29

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
