THE JOB:

The Executive Director of Claims and Risk Management will be responsible for the Claims self-administration program for MGM Resorts International and the company's national locations in Nevada, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey. This leader will be tasked with driving the performance of the claims team, manage financial exposures, oversee and manage all Liability litigation, manage first-party insurance claims across multiple lines, and assist in leading the Risk Management COE on departmental initiatives.  The leader will work directly with insurance carrier partners and both internal and external defense counsel to create and execute strategies for resolution and trial preparedness. Further, this leader will also support the SVP of Risk Management with insurance procurement and insurance administration across multiple lines of business, including business presentations across North America and internationally.

THE DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Directs and leads the Claims Self-Administration program and Claims team by establishing Standard Operating procedures and best practices for investigations, file handling, reserve setting, and claims evaluations.
  • Engage in training and continuing education of the Claims team. Manage and oversee all liability claim litigation by establishing litigation management best practices.
  • Establish, oversee, and manage relationships with Outside Defense Counsel, In House Legal Counsel, and Insurance Carrier Claims Professionals to further the mission of the Self-Administration and Risk Management program.
  • Assign claims to the team, manage their day-to-day responsibilities, support them in developing litigation strategies, and executing those strategies with in house and outside counsel, including providing the adjuster with settlement authority and having oversight of file reserve increases on general liability claims. Attend mediations, arbitrations, trials as needed.
  • Participates in all aspects of the company’s Casualty Insurance renewals, including the review of claim data and submissions.
  • Leads market presentations to Brokers and Insurance Carriers, which may require travel across the US and internationally, on the value proposition of the MGM Account.
  • Reviews Casualty Insurance policies with a clear understanding and knowledge of insurance coverages.
  • Collaborate with the SVP of Risk Management and the Executive Director of Insurance, works with the Brokers on negotiations on pricing, terms, and conditions for all Casualty Renewals.
  • Communicate, foster, and grow relationships with outside defense counsel and insurance carriers to support the claims and litigation process.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders such as the Finance and Legal Departments, manage all non-casualty claims that may include 1st Party Property Claims, Cyber, Directors and Officers, Employment Legal Liability, and otherwise.
  • Work with MGM Finance teams and outside actuaries on actuarial studies. Identify, evaluate, and provide recommendations to various internal stakeholders to decrease the frequency and severity of third- party injuries and losses.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor cost-containment and mitigation strategies to prevent and minimize losses.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of experience managing general liability claims and litigation, with strong expertise in claims handling, litigation strategy, and settlement authority. They hold a bachelor’s degree (required) and are licensed and in good standing with a U.S. state bar or possess a CPCU designation; a Juris Doctor is preferred.
  • They have a solid understanding of insurance regulations, reserve setting, and the financial impact of claims, along with experience in mediation, arbitration, and trial processes. They are skilled in setting goals, defining KPIs, delegating work, and providing strategic oversight to claims teams.
  • They communicate effectively, build strong relationships with counsel and carriers, manage complex claims with sound judgment, and thrive under tight deadlines. International travel is required.
