Job Description

Executive Director, Global Medical Expert HIV Prevention - GMA Virology & Inflammation

Company

Gilead Sciences is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need.  The company's mission is to advance the care of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases worldwide.  Headquartered in Foster City, California, Gilead has operations in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.  We have the following exciting opportunity in our Global Medical Affairs Virology & Inflammation (GMAVI) organization.

Overall Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President and Head of GMAVI, the Executive Director, Global Medical Expert (GME) – HIV Prevention serves as a senior medical leader and subject matter expert with primary accountability for advancing US HIV Prevention strategy, with a particular focus on accelerating PrEP expansion in priority populations and prioritized provider settings. This includes educating providers around the direct linkage between HIV & STI testing and the barriers to implementing PrEP into current clinic workflows.

The role provides scientific leadership across Medical Affairs, shaping external scientific dialogue, consensus development, and medical strategy to support Gilead’s HIV prevention portfolio across current and future modalities. The Executive Director acts as a visible external thought leader and internal strategic partner, translating complex scientific, clinical, and implementation insights into actionable medical strategy.

The role operates across the HIV continuum, with approximately 70% focus on HIV Prevention and 30% on HIV Treatment, ensuring coherent medical narratives across prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. The position is US focused, with accountability for US medical priorities (70%) and selective engagement with global stakeholders (30%) as relevant.

Specific Job Requirements

·       Serve as a medical thought leader for PrEP adoption and persistence, advancing evidence‑based approaches to initiation, continuation, re‑initiation, and discontinuation management in real‑world settings.

·       Provide senior medical leadership on the integration of PrEP into routine clinical workflows, including protocolization across priority provider settings (eg, primary care, STI clinics, women’s health, FQHCs, addiction services)

·       Support the US medical strategy for simplified, stepwise PrEP implementation approaches, ensuring scientific accuracy while addressing real‑world feasibility in time‑constrained clinical environments.

·       Support medical field engagement models for PrEP expansion, including alignment across PSEs, RMEs, and matrix partners, to ensure consistent, compliant, and high‑impact scientific exchange.

·       Translate insights from field engagement, advisory boards, and educational programs into iterative refinement of US HIV Prevention medical strategy, with a focus on improving uptake, persistence, and equity.

·       Provide senior medical input into community‑based and implementation science partnerships, with a focus on addressing unmet need and health equity in priority US populations.

·       Support US medical strategy for long‑acting PrEP and future prevention modalities, ensuring readiness across clinical, educational, and implementation dimensions

·       Partner with cross‑functional medical teams to translate real‑world evidence and insight generation into actionable strategy addressing uptake, persistence, and access gaps

·       Contribute to the integration of HIV prevention and treatment medical narratives, ensuring scientific consistency across the care continuum.

·       Act as a visible external scientific ambassador in priority US forums, representing Gilead with credibility, balance, and compliance.

·       Lead advanced scientific exchange on nuanced HIV prevention topics, providing expert interpretation and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

·       Critically appraise and synthesize data from major scientific congresses, offering balanced, comprehensive updates to inform strategic decision-making.

·       Assess and prioritise research opportunities, including investigator/site selection for Gilead-sponsored studies, collaborative research, and investigator-sponsored initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.

·       Facilitate global advisory programmes, guiding discussions on complex clinical themes and capturing insights from leading international experts to shape therapeutic area strategy.

·       Design and execute multi-topic educational programmes across varied geographies, tailoring content to address evolving needs in HIV prevention.

·       Develop and deliver training for Gilead-contracted healthcare professionals, focusing on the safe and effective use of Gilead medicines in HIV prevention.

·       Lead internal educational sessions for Gilead colleagues, enhancing understanding of healthcare landscapes, disease trends, and therapeutic innovations.
