Summary:

The Executive Director, Global Market Research is responsible for setting the vision, strategy, and execution of Bristol Myers Squibb’s (BMS’s) global Market Research capability across all Therapeutic Areas and lifecycle stages. This role serves as a senior thought partner to Commercialization and Enterprise leadership providing strategic insight to inform pipeline prioritization, launch decisions, brand strategy, and in-market optimization. 

The Executive Director oversees a broad portfolio of Market Research capabilities, including performance tracking, demand and volume research, market mapping, brand positioning and messaging, market access research, early pipeline opportunity assessment, and patient- and consumer-focused research. This leader is accountable for ensuring research is methodologically sound, decision-oriented, compliant, and consistently applied across regions and brands. 

In addition, the role owns the evolution of Market Research ways of working, innovation agenda, and AI-enabled capabilities, including serving as Business Product Owner for Market Research AI solutions. With a global remit and a large, multi-disciplinary team, this Executive Director ensures Market Research operates mas a strategic, scalable, and trusted enterprise capability that drives confident decision-making across BMS.

Responsibilities:

Set Global Market Research Vision & Strategy

  • Define the global Market Research strategy aligned to BMS’s portfolio, pipeline, and commercialization priorities
  • Establish clear principles for how Market Research informs decisions across early development, launch, and in-market optimization
  • Ensure consistency and connectivity across research approaches, outputs, and insights globally

Lead a Comprehensive Market Research Capability Portfolio

  • Performance Tracking: Brand health, campaign effectiveness, and longitudinal measurement
  • Volume / Demand Research: Forecast inputs, demand drivers, scenario testing
  • Market Mapping: Treatment pathways, competitive landscapes, stakeholder ecosystems
  • Brand Positioning & Messaging: Value proposition development, message testing, narrative optimization
  • Market Access Research: Payer, HTA, access stakeholder research and evidence needs
  • Early Pipeline & Clinical Research: Market sizing, opportunity assessment, unmet need analysis
  • Patient & Direct-to-Consumer Research: Patient journeys, behaviors, preferences, and experiences

Act as Senior Thought Partner to Executive Leadership

  • Partner with SVP and C-suite–level leaders across Commercialization (Marketing, Sales, Medical, and Market Access), and Development
  • Frame complex research findings into clear, decision-ready recommendations
  • Guide leadership through ambiguity, trade-offs, and risk-informed decisions using robust insight

Own Market Research Operating Model & Governance

  • Define global standards for research design, vendor usage, methodologies, and deliverables
  • Establish governance frameworks to prioritize demand, ensure quality, and manage consistency across regions and brands
  • Reduce duplication and fragmentation by driving a more integrated, enterprise view of Market Research

Lead Market Research Innovation & AI Enablement

  • Set the innovation agenda for Market Research, including advanced analytics, automation, and AI
  • Serve as Business Product Owner for Market Research AI, defining roadmap, use cases, and value realization
  • Explore and scale new approaches (e.g., AI-assisted analysis, synthetic data, rapid testing methodologies) while maintaining scientific rigor

Ensure Compliance, Ethics & Scientific Integrity

  • Ensure all Market Research activities comply with global regulations, ethical standards, and internal policies
  • Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy teams to manage risk while enabling speed and innovation
  • Maintain high standards of methodological rigor and transparency

Build, Lead & Develop a High-Performing Market Research Organization

  • Lead and develop a Market Research organization delivering enterprise and brand insights across Therapeutic Areas and lifecycle stages
  • Enable effective partnership with in-market stakeholders, supporting markets where dedicated Market Research roles may not exist
  • Build leadership depth through coaching, succession planning, and targeted capability development
  • Foster a culture of curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement while operating in a highly matrixed global environment

Manage Strategic Partners & Investment Portfolio

  • Oversee global research vendor ecosystem and strategic partnerships
  • Manage significant Market Research investment to ensure efficiency, quality, and impact
  • Continuously evaluate make/buy decisions and emerging partners or platforms

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in commercial, marketing, or insights roles within the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Proven success influencing senior leaders and partnering with Business Unit heads to shape commercial strategy.
  • Deep expertise in customer insights, omnichannel engagement, commercial analytics, and AI-driven solutions within U.S. healthcare.
  • Strong leadership experience managing large, cross-functional or matrixed teams, including BU-specific resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex strategic initiatives and drive organizational change.
  • Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative solution development skills.
  • Demonstrable results in team development, including recognition, feedback, and organizational design.
  • Highly adaptable mindset, balancing growth orientation with attention to detail and execution excellence.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including all field-based customer-facing roles.
  • Expertise in predictive modeling, machine learning, and GenAI applications for medical decision-making.
  • Strong knowledge of data storytelling and visualization techniques to communicate complex insights effectively.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and advanced analytics environments.
  • Familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) and conversational analytics for insight generation.
  • Ability to operationalize AI-driven personalization and segmentation logic within medical engagement strategies.
  • Skilled in change management and capability enablement, including training and adoption programs.
  • Understanding of global regulatory requirements for medical data usage and analytics compliance.

Compensation Overview:

$273,870 - $331,866

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

Paid Time Off

  • US Exempt Employees: flexible time off (unlimited, with manager approval, 11 paid national holidays (not applicable to employees in Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico or Rayzebio employees)

  • Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees: 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays

Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.

All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown. 

*Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.
