Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Corporate Communications for GMNA, the Executive Communications Lead is a highly visible role responsible for developing and driving an integrated executive communications strategy for the GM North America leadership team. This leader will collaborate to amplify the voice, vision, and priorities of GM North America, connecting them to GM’s company narrative and business strategy.
Operating with a high degree of independence and judgment, this role partners closely with senior executives to shape how they show up with employees, media, industry partners, dealers, and other external stakeholders. The Executive Communications Lead anticipates issues and opportunities, provides strategic counsel, and delivers creative, high-impact communications that support business outcomes, protect and enhance reputation, and engage key audiences at scale.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):
Support the GM North America executive communications strategy
Develop and maintain a comprehensive, multi-channel executive communications plan for GM North America leaders that advances business priorities, supports key initiatives, and reinforces GM’s company narrative.
Executive positioning & thought leadership
Define and evolve clear positioning, narratives, and platforms for GM North America leaders, including thought leadership themes, communications channels, and marquee internal and external moments (e.g., town halls, leadership summits, industry forums, media interviews etc.
Lead internal communications & employee engagement for GM North America leadership
Partner with Global Communications, and business leaders to design and deliver leader-led communications that inform, inspire, and connect employees to the GM North America strategy, culture, and performance.
Drive external visibility and readiness for key engagements
Support and, lead planning and preparation for executive participation in media interviews, industry events, dealer and customer engagements, and other external forums, including messaging, talking points, Q&A, presentations, and briefing materials.
Provide strategic counsel on complex and sensitive issues
Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, offering timely, sound counsel during fast-moving, ambiguous, or issues-related situations; help anticipate and mitigate risk while enabling leaders to communicate with clarity and confidence.
Deliver high-impact content and storytelling
Personally craft and refine speeches, remarks, scripts, talking points, presentations, internal notes, and digital content that reflect each leader’s authentic voice and meet a high bar for clarity, brevity, and impact.
Lead cross-functional alignment and integration
Work across Global Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, HR, and business teams to ensure GM North America executive communications are aligned,
Measure impact and continuously improve
Use audience feedback, engagement metrics, and qualitative insights to assess the effectiveness of executive communications and recommend refinements to strategy, channels, and content.
Additional Job Description:
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Business, or related field.
7+ years of progressively responsible experience in executive communications or a closely related field, ideally supporting senior leaders in large, complex organizations.
Knowledge/relationships with key business/product media outlets in the U.S.
Proficient writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to translate complex business topics into clear, compelling narratives for multiple audiences and channels.
Proven experience operating as a strategic advisor to senior leaders, with strong judgment, discretion, and the ability to influence at senior levels.
Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder communications programs from strategy through execution, often under tight timelines and in fast-changing situations.
Comfort working in a fast-paced, highly matrixed environment, with the ability to prioritize, make decisions, and move work forward with limited direction.
Have to be willing to travel - 15+%
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
Experience in the automotive, manufacturing, or technology industries.
Direct experience supporting C-suite or business unit leadership teams.
Experience designing and executing leader-led internal/external communications programs at scale (e.g., town halls, video scripting, executive social,)
Experience with multimedia storytelling and digital channels.
