About the Role

The European Senior Editor, The Lancet Weekly plays a key role in shaping high-impact medical science by critically evaluating submissions, guiding peer review, and ensuring the highest standards of clinical and scientific reporting. In this role, you will engage with leading researchers worldwide, commission influential content, and represent The Lancet across Europe to strengthen partnerships and attract top-quality submissions. It is a highly collaborative editorial position with significant influence on clinical research communication.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

  • To read and critically evaluate all papers allocated, present them to the team, arrange peer review for a select few with the highest potential clinical impact, and participate in consensual decision making.

  • To take part in the critical assessment of other editors’ papers at pre- and post-review stages, and to provide clinical context when needed.

  • To negotiate revisions with authors ensuring that manuscripts that are accepted for publication meet with the highest standards of medical and scientific reporting.

  • To regularly assess editorial working practices and think of new ways to make the peer review process more timely and efficient.

  • To monitor ongoing research activity in allocated specialty areas, and across medicine, to regularly communicate with international key medical researchers, and pro-actively attract key clinical trials to The Lancet.

  • To contribute to the commissioning of Comments, Perspectives, Seminars, Reviews, and Clinical, Global Health, and other Series and Commissions in agreement with the commissioning teams.

  • To take part in the weekly rote of leader writing and contribute clinical and scientific ideas for editorials and World Reports at the weekly meeting.
    Commenting regularly on other writers' drafts

  • To represent The Lancet family of journals in Europe to promote the journal and to attract high-quality submissions.

  • To help develop a European strategy for the Lancet family.

  • To visit key opinion leaders, academic institutions, policymakers, and other health organizations and create strong partnerships key opinion leaders, academic institutions, policymakers, and other health organizations and create strong partnerships.

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work in a team and to keep strict deadlines

  • Negotiation skills with members of the medical profession, the media, and other editors

  • General knowledge and technical skills

  • Knowledge of biological and medical sciences

  • Good use of English

  • Writing skills

  • Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences (and any other requirements)

  • PhD or MD in a health-related field is required. Some editorial experience is of advantage. Substantial postgraduate clinical and/or research experience is highly desirable.
