Ergonomist

Flint, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

The Role

Flint Assembly is seeking an Ergonomist to join the UAW-GM Joint Ergonomics Technical Team (JETT), jointly leading efforts to reduce cumulative trauma injuries and improve workplace safety for all plant personnel. You will own the plant ergonomics process in partnership with the UAW, using data, ergonomic analysis tools, and cross-functional collaboration to identify risk, implement solutions, and support both current production and future programs.

This is a fast-paced, team-based environment where success requires strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to influence across production, engineering, medical, and union partners.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Implement and co-administer the plant ergonomics process with UAW partners in alignment with the National UAW-GM Ergonomics Agreement and GM’s Workplace Safety System Performance Standard.

  • Serve as the plant ergonomics subject matter expert, supporting launch, production trials, productivity initiatives, and day-to-day operations.

  • Capture, analyze, and report ergonomic and medical injury/illness data; develop metrics and track trends to identify risk and drive action.

  • Perform first- and second-level ergonomic risk analyses for current and future states using approved tools.

  • Apply GM Ergonomics Design Requirements (e.g., CMA, LMS, containers, dollies, POU racks) to jobs and material handling systems to ensure compliance with ergonomic guidelines.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with UAW ergonomic partners, plant medical, and other key stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production, and other functions to identify ergonomic risks, develop solutions, implement job modifications, and drive issues to closure.

  • Enter ergonomic issues into the GM Technical Ergonomic Database (TED) or related systems and manage them through closure.

  • Support remediation of ergonomic line-balance concerns, including review and evaluation of APS ergonomic screening flags.

  • Lead and facilitate formal and informal injury-reduction and continuous-improvement initiatives.

  • Conduct ergonomics-related training and presentations for salaried and hourly employees.

  • Drive innovation in tools, technologies, processes, and devices that reduce ergonomic risks and injuries.

  • Support ergonomic activities associated with new product planning and launch and align with corporate ergonomics initiatives.

  • Provide regular updates to the Plant Safety Review Board (PSRB) and participate in the Local Joint Health and Safety Committee (LJHSC).

  • Support the development and execution of the annual Ergonomic Business Plan Deployment (BPD).

  • Perform additional Industrial Engineering or ergonomics-related assignments as required.

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 2+ years of ergonomics experience in manufacturing/assembly operations.

  • 1+ years of experience using ergonomic analysis tools (e.g., digital human modeling, ergonomics software).

  • Demonstrated experience organizing, planning, and executing manufacturing and/or ergonomics projects, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Proven ability to solve complex problems in a fast-paced environment using data analysis and structured problem-solving methods.

  • Experience training, coaching, and developing salaried and hourly employees.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with production, maintenance, engineering, medical, and union partners.

  • High level of analytical ability and problem-solving skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office and data visualization tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI).

  • Demonstrated ability to focus on targets, work through obstacles and uncertainty, take proactive action to improve results, and clearly communicate goals and required actions.

  • Willingness and ability to work weekends or alternative shifts as needed to meet production demands.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related ergonomics/industrial engineering field, or equivalent experience.

  • Prior leadership experience (formal or informal).

  • Advanced understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes and how they impact ergonomic risk.

  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement Processes (CIP) and proficiency in the Throughput Improvement Process (TIP).

  • Experience working in or supervising employees in a union environment; demonstrated ability to work effectively with the UAW and/or other unions.

  • Knowledge of 3D CAD software and Digital Human Modeling tools to support ergonomic assessments and workstation design reviews.

  • Experience with APS, TED, and other GM ergonomics or production systems and tools.
