Position Specific Summary
The Environmental Services Inspector position at the City of Tucson’s Environmental Services Department is responsible for performing field inspections, environmental sampling, and compliance monitoring in support of regulatory requirements. This position provides support to various solid waste operations and ensures compliance with permit requirements.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Environmental Services Manager. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory permits, including random refuse load checks, stormwater inspections, air quality evaluations, fugitive dust monitoring, landfill gas probes, landfill gas extraction systems, groundwater treatment systems, compost feedstock, diversion material assessments, and facility-wide environmental audits.
Drives to various locations to collect environmental samples in accordance with established protocols, including groundwater, landfill gas, leachate, stormwater runoff, contaminated soil, soil vapor, and compost. Submits samples to certified laboratories for analysis.
Calibrates and maintains environmental sampling and monitoring equipment such as pH meters, temperature probes, groundwater sounders, wastewater compositors, vapor canisters, and landfill gas monitors to ensure accurate readings and compliance with standards.
Performs maintenance and minor repairs on environmental monitoring systems and equipment to ensure proper functionality and regulatory compliance. Coordinates with contractors for specialized maintenance and repair services.
Executes field tasks required to maintain the function of equipment and operations, including system maintenance, compost windrow or pile preparation, segregation of green waste, and assisting with grinding and screening processes using related equipment.
Supports overall environmental compliance through responsive fieldwork and contributes to the upkeep of environmental systems and infrastructure.
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
Indoor and outdoor work with some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or environmental hazardous environment.
