The EHS Manager leads all environmental, health, and safety programs and ensures regulatory compliance, operational risk reduction, and continuous improvement across cleanroom manufacturing, facilities operations, chemical management, and construction activities.
The EHS Manager serves as a key member of the site leadership team and is responsible for building a strong safety culture in a 24/7 manufacturing environment while maintaining full compliance with OSHA, EPA, and North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Site EHS Leadership
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for all EHS programs at the site.
- Serve as the primary advisor to Site Leadership on EHS risk, regulatory exposure, and compliance obligations.
- Lead and develop the site EHS team, including performance management and capability building.
- Drive accountability for EHS performance across Operations, Engineering and Facilities.
Environmental Compliance & Permitting
- Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including EPA and NCDEQ requirements.
- Manage air permitting programs (Title V), hazardous waste operations (RCRA), wastewater discharge, stormwater management, and chemical storage.
- Lead regulatory reporting, inspections, and agency engagement.
- Oversee spill prevention, hazardous materials storage, and emergency response programs.
Risk Management
- Lead EHS oversight for high-hazard chemical use, including acids, solvents, toxic gases, pyrophoric, and specialty semiconductor materials.
- Ensure safe management of gas cabinets, bulk chemical distribution systems, abatement systems, and chemical waste treatment operations.
- Support safety programs such as confined space, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, and machine safety.
- Partner with Facilities and Engineering on process safety reviews, tool installations, and system modifications.
Occupational Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, including industrial hygiene, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, ergonomics, and injury prevention programs.
- Oversee contractor safety programs, including construction and equipment installation projects.
- Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis; ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
- Establish leading and lagging indicators to drive injury reduction and risk mitigation.
Emergency Preparedness & Business Continuity
- Direct site emergency response planning, including chemical release scenarios, fire response, severe weather, and utility disruptions.
- Coordinate drills and training with local emergency responders.
EHS Management System & Continuous Improvement
- Lead the development, implementation, and governance of a unified EHS Management System aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Coordinate internal audits and certification activities.
- Align site efforts with corporate goals and foster cross-functional partnerships with HR, Legal, Engineering, Operations, Facilities, and others.
- Promote continuous improvement using data, risk assessments, and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety, Engineering, or related field; Master’s or MBA preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 10+ years in progressive EHS roles, including 5+ years managing site EHS programs; Experience in semiconductor manufacturing, advanced electronics, chemical manufacturing, or similarly high-hazard process industries strongly preferred.
- Certifications (preferred):
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
- CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)
- CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)
- Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and EPA environmental requirements.
- Working knowledge of North Carolina environmental regulations and permitting processes.
- Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation and audit readiness.
- Understanding of semiconductor fabrication processes, facilities systems (HVAC, scrubbers, abatement), and chemical distribution infrastructure.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence engineers, operators, technicians, and senior leaders.
- Clear communicator who can translate regulatory and technical risks into operational priorities.
- Strong analytical capability; comfortable using metrics and dashboards to drive performance.
- Experience with EHS management software and enterprise reporting systems.
- Ability to lead in a fast-paced, 24/7 manufacturing environment with high operational discipline.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $120,000 – 170,000USD.
Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications.
