Environmental Coordinator

Job Summary
A corporate-wide position involving professional technical skill and/or judgment in areas involving an integration of science, legal requirements, operational activities and policy. The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for analysis, design, implementation and management of existing and new environmental programs, regulations and legislation to provide environmental support for business units in a proactive, cost-effective manner that is consistent with NiSource policy and business objectives. Responsibilities encompass a wide range of environmental program areas including, but not limited to, air, water, natural resource and waste management in accordance with local, state and federal requirements. Responsibilities also include activities related to enhancing and maintaining the NiSource Environmental Management System including analyzing and managing data to direct and cause continuous improvement related to environmental performance and to enhance and maintain a process to track, monitor, communicate and minimize environmental related risk. Essential Functions

  • Monitors performance of plant systems, processes, and equipment as they relate to environmental compliance; evaluates operating data and trends to identify compliance risks and initiate corrective actions. 
  • Analyzes, interprets, and maintains working knowledge of environmental regulations, permits, policies, and corporate requirements; assesses impacts to business operations and future direction. 
  • Develops, implements, and continuously improves compliant and proactive environmental systems, programs, and procedures to minimize environmental risk. 
  • Coordinates and performs required environmental activities to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented and sustained at full compliance. 
  • Integrates business and regulatory needs by partnering across multiple organizational levels to support change management, action planning, and alignment with operational constraints. 
  • Prepares written summaries, reports, and formal regulatory communications, including comments on proposed environmental regulations submitted to state or federal agencies. 
  • Acts as company representative during regulatory agency interactions, inspections, audits, and environmental reviews.
  • Provides clear, concise communication to leadership and business partners regarding environmental performance, compliance status, and risk mitigation.
  • Manages environmental budgets, capital planning, and resources to deliver results safely, efficiently, on time, and within budget.
  • Works independently and collaboratively with internal teams and external contractors; provides technical expertise, training, and documentation to support environmental compliance initiatives.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Environmental Science, Engineering or related field. Equivalent work experience may be substituted
  • A minimum of 3+ years relevant experience is required for this position
  • Working knowledge of environmental air, water, natural resource and waste management requirements
  • Strong learning agility skills and able to adapt to a consistently changing environment
  • Self-directed aptitude and willing to contribute to a wide array of environmental disciplines
  • Competent in the use of electronic spreadsheets and word processing software
  • Ability to work cooperatively and build consensus within a diverse working group
  • Ability to use professional judgment and work in a self-directed manner with an appropriate level of direct supervision
  • Well-developed analytical and communication skills
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations related to the energy industry
  • Knowledge of energy industry operations
  • Knowledge of operations support systems (e.g. Maximo, Work Management, GIS, CIS)
  • Well-developed analytical and communication skills
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management

Levels

  • Environmental Coordinator 2: $82,200-123,200
  • Environmental Coordinator 3: $96,600-$144,900

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Experience directing third party consultants

Salary Range*:

$82,200.00 - $144,900.00

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
