Job Description
NLR has an opening for an Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Point of Contact (POC) for the Bioeconomy & Sustainable Transportation (BEST) research directorate and support
organizations. The ESH POC will provide technical guidance for hazard identification and control of new and modified work conducted in select research laboratories in the Field Test Laboratory Building (FTLB).
- Collaborate with research, operational staff, and subcontractors to evaluate risks of new or modified work activities and proactively implement continuous environmental, safety, and health (ESH) improvement.
- Working with general direction, assists in the development of hazard identification and control documents as part of research/operations/construction projects or activity life cycle.
- Apply advanced ESH technical skills to tasks within areas of expertise such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, construction safety, emergency response and other areas individually or in combination.
- Participate in ESH inspections, audits, and oversight assessments. Supports the implementation of Environmental programs in areas such as National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), air quality, water quality, chemical and waste management, natural resources, storage tanks, spill prevention, construction, and Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
- Respond to staff inquiries, concerns, and requests for assistance on ESH matters including guidance on ESH program implementation and/or interpretation.
- Develop and provide other ESH training to various organizational units including health orientations and onboarding.
- Support development of emergency response plans. Provide specialized task, technical guidance, or assistance at a hazardous substance release incident. Facilitate post-emergency response stabilization efforts.
- Support accident/incident investigation and causal analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.
- Performs or facilitates industrial hygiene monitoring, documentation, and reporting. Recommends corrective measures accordingly as it relates to air sampling, noise level studies and monitoring, medical surveillance, and ergonomic assessments.
- Provide or facilitate design and/or code compliance reviews and communicate these requirements to all levels of staff.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Considerable knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

- Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to build relationships with colleagues and internal customers.
- Interacting with researchers, line management, and senior management in a manner that emphasizes and enhances safety culture.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
- Proficient computer and technology skills including MS Office Suite, email, integrated software databases, and artificial intelligence (AI) and how they can be applied to integrated safety management systems.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to travel on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong chemical safety training and experience – such as a minor in chemistry or experience as a chemical hygiene officer or program owner.
Experience working in a research and development environment – such as a laboratory or university.
Familiarity with DOE 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program and Integrated Safety Management Systems.
Ability to lead and participate on both intra-office and cross-organizational teams.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $83,600 - $150,500
NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
