Enterprise Cloud Architect

UMB’s Enterprise Cloud Architect team was recently formed to streamline and accelerate adoption of the Cloud.  The team provides self-service means to empower other teams to deploy cloud-native platforms while ensuring security, governance, architectural best-practice, cost containment, and control.  The team works to provide architecture, tools, services, knowledge, support, organization structure, and operating model arranged as a compelling product.

As an Enterprise Cloud Architect, you will serve as a strategic leader responsible for defining and evolving the organization's cloud-native platform and enterprise architecture strategy.  This role uniquely combines enterprise architecture vision, solutions design expertise, and hands-on cloud engineering to enable enterprise-wide cloud adoption while maintaining alignment with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.  You will lead enterprise responses to disruptive forces and emerging technology trends by identifying and orchestrating the execution of change toward desired business vision and outcomes.  This is a subset of the overall responsibilities which will include multiple initiatives as assigned by IT leadership. 

This role is hybrid (Mon through Thu on-site / Fri remote) at the UMB Technology & Operations Center located in downtown Kansas City, MO.

How you’ll spend your time:

  • Enterprise Architecture & Strategy:
    • Define enterprise cloud strategy, reference architectures, and design patterns aligned with business modernization roadmaps.
    • Lead enterprise architecture discipline across domains in conjunction with business and IT leadership.
    • Identify and analyze emerging technology trends relevant to the organization.
    • Lead strategy development for assigned domains and detect critical deficiencies, legacy systems, and technical debt.
    • Develop, maintain, and evolve architecture context (current, transition, and future state) across domains.
    • Build consensus across technical and business stakeholders on cloud adoption and architectural direction.
    • Understand and document integration between on-prem and cloud systems with a lens on security, compliance and governance.
  • Cloud Solutions & Design
    • Architect and design cloud solutions (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS) that meet business requirements, compliance, and cost optimization goals.
    • Partner with business and technical teams to translate requirements into enterprise and cloud infrastructure solutions.
    • Lead evaluation and selection of cloud and technology product standards.
    • Design infrastructure-as-code frameworks and reusable components.
    • Establish governance frameworks, technology standards, and architectural principles.
  • Platform Engineering & Operations
    • Design and implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies
    • Develop and oversee automation frameworks and configuration management practices.
    • Establish infrastructure monitoring, observability, and operational standards.
    • Ensure architecture and automation satisfy regulatory compliance and security controls.
    • Participate in operational escalation and on-call support as needed.
  • Coach, mentor, and collaborate with technical subject matter experts and architecture peers.
  • Mentor application and infrastructure teams on cloud capabilities and DevOps best practices.
  • Communicate architectural vision and technical decisions to executive, technical, and business audiences.
  • Develop technology roadmaps and maintain reusable architecture documentation and patterns.
  • Serve as internal cloud and architecture subject matter expert.

We’re excited to talk with you if you have:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • At least 10 years of IT experience with progressive responsibility.
  • At least 5 years enterprise or solutions architecture experience, preferably in leadership role.
  • At least 5 years designing and implementing highly available, scalable cloud architectures (AWS/Azure/GCP).
  • At least 3 years architecting and deploying cloud services for enterprise environments.
  • At least 2 years establishing observability and operational excellence solutions (metrics, logging, tracing).
  • At least 2 years with IT controls, compliance frameworks, and security standards.
  • Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional teams and influencing senior-level stakeholders.
  • Expert-level infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
  • Strong cloud platform knowledge with cost optimization expertise (AWS/Azure/GCP).
  • Advanced understanding of cloud security, identity, and compliance (IAM, encryption, VPC).
  • Automation scripting languages (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS).
  • CI/CD pipeline design and DevOps workflows (Terraform).
  • Configuration management tools (Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
  • Network fundamentals (VPC design, routing, load balancing, DNS).
  • Software development methodologies and QA standards.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and architecture frameworks (TOGAF, ITIL).
  • Ability to not only architect, but build.

Bonus Points if you have:

  • Financial systems integration/implementation experience.
  • Any of the following certifications: AWS Solutions Architect Professional, AWS DevOps Engineer Professional, or equivalent enterprise cloud certification (Azure, GCP, TOGAF).

Compensation Range:

$83,200.00 - $178,800.00

The posted compensation range on this listing represents UMB’s standard for this role, but the actual compensation may vary by geographic location, experience level, and other job-related factors.
