Job Description Summary
Engages in the maintenance, repair, calibration and modification of a wide variety of highly complex and specialized biomedical, electronic and electromechanical (sterilization/dental and digital radiology) equipment. Diagnoses problems, and makes recommendations. Advises on and implements the adaptation and modification of equipment and devices.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Senior Manager of Facilities and is supervised by the Head Engineering Technician (Supervisor). Interacts with the Clinic faculty, staff and students and may liaise with external vendors.
Work Performed
- Maintains and repairs a wide range of advanced dental equipment such as radiology, dental chairs, lights, handpieces and laboratory equipment.
- Makes recommendations on the adaptation and modification of equipment to meet the needs of the dental clinic.
- Designs,modifies and adapts components to meet specific needs.
- Advises the senior management on the viability of various resources, components, and devices.
- Performs diagnostic, preventative and general maintenance on a wide variety of complex electronic and electromechanical sterilization/dental and digital radiology equipment. Scheduled maintenance includes visual and mechanical inspection, safety testing, performance testing, scheduled parts replacement and adjustment, and corrective action which include adjustments, calibrations and repairs.
- Identifies design issues and recommends solutions.
- Demonstrates correct equipment usage and operation.
- Responds to telephone or direct requests for service from equipment users.
- Compiles data and ensures accurate database entry of technical records is complete.
- Waterline and suction flushing of the dental chairs as required.
- Keeps informed of advances in equipment and related technology.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors or incorrect decisions could have a serous impact on the clinic as well as delivery of patient care, community service and educational activities. In addition, failure to ensure that adequate safety protocols are in place could cause significant risk and liability for the university as well as negatively impact health and safety.

Reports to the Sr. Manager of Facilities and receives direction and supervision from the Head Engineering Technician.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship. Minimum 5 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology or equivalent is required. Minimum of 5 years medical/dental/radiology equipment service experience required. Must have a working knowledge of computers, electronics, schematics, electricity, electro-mechanical, fluidics, pneumatics, hydraulic and digital radiology theories and practices. Excellent technical knowledge of biomedical (sterilization, dental and radiology) equipment preventive and corrective repair standards.
Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
Ability to analyze, troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment repairs.
Ability to read colour codes on wiring and electrical components.
Ability to function in a sterile environment as necessary.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally verbally and in writing.
Ability to effectively use office software at an intermediate level (Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel).
Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to be proactive and take initiative.
Ability to maintain excellent time management skills.
Must be flexible to work an afternoon/weekend shift when required.
