THE ROLE

Under general direction from the Chief Engineer and Engineering Supervisor, the Engineering Technician II performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled inspection, testing, maintenance, installation and repair tasks in multiple trades to maintain Convention Center buildings, systems, equipment, furnishings, fixtures and campus in proper condition; and to provide temporary electrical, air, water and gas services in support of exhibitions, trade shows and other events.   This position may include assignment of up to a 12-hour work shift, varying days and shift times including nights, holidays, and weekends. In the absence of management, the Engineering Technician may receive functional event related instructions from the Event Manager(s), or general instructions from the Director of Operations or Assistant General Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe, secure, pleasant environment for clients, visitors, and co-workers.
  • Follows Convention Center policies and procedures, applicable codes, and safety regulations.
  • Performs inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, safety and building systems; equipment, structures and components as required or assigned, using standardized procedures and specialized skills
  • Operated Building Control Systems for the purpose of controlling space temperature and lighting.
  • Layout, install and remove temporary electrical, air, water, and gas services in support of exhibitions, trade shows, and other events.
  •  Accurately inputs data into department computers and maintains documents for the purposes of recording materials used or required, work needed or performed, client billing, time utilized, monitoring physical plant conditions, and report generation.  Documentation is kept current daily and includes all required information.
  • Responds to requests promptly and performs tasks with a demonstrated sense of urgency. 
  • Proactively inspects facilities and equipment and acts promptly to address problems found.
  • Performs all assigned tasks and conducts themselves in a professional manner.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of position requirements and attends in-service education classes.
  • Uses and maintains various meters, test instruments, drills, saws and other power and hand tools in the performance of job duties.
  • Utilizes powered aerial lifts, scaffold and ladders to perform elevated work as needed.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized fashion at all times.
  • Utilizes and properly maintains assigned Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Communicates work activities and status to Chief Engineer / Engineering Supervisor and affected departments in a timely manner.
  •  Performs work on his/her own without more than limited supervision. Plans work to minimize time and material needed for proper completion.
  •  Maintains working knowledge of facility utility and life safety systems locations and operation.
  • Promotes energy conservation in plant operations and work activities.
  • Performs plant operations, physical plant rounds, routines, and documentation.
  • Participates in development of standardized maintenance and repair processes for department.
  • May serve as member of department or facility committees.
  • Occasionally coordinates activities of contractors working in the Convention Center.
  • Infrequently may perform duties of Engineering Supervisor
  • Perform other related duties as may assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience    

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduation from accredited trade school or apprenticeship. in related field is preferred.
  • Three years verifiable facilities or commercial maintenance experience, with journeyman level responsibility. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of relevant fire code and OSHA safety regulations
  • Specialized knowledge (journey level or equivalent) in one or more of the following areas: Commercial Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, or Building Control Systems.
  • Must have basic computer skills in Microsoft office applications and word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, and internet software.
  • Ability to work from elevated surfaces, such as ladders and lifts.
  • Ability to analyze challenges, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and make recommendations for improvement to Engineering Management; implement approved recommendations in support of organizational objectives.
  • Ability to develop plans, specifications and drawings for projects and tasks related to area of expertise.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled work in multiple building trades and journey level work in one or more trades.
  • Ability to work from and interpret documents such as drawings, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to perform general shop math to calculate cost, ratio, proportions, surfaces, volumes, weights and measures.

Computer Skills                                               

To perform this job successfully, the individual should have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Momentous, and BlueBeam.
