About the Role

We are seeking a senior engineering leader to drive Mainframe modernisation at scale. In this role, you will set strategic technical direction, lead a high‑performing engineering team, and deliver innovative solutions that transform CBA and Bankwest’s Mainframe estate.

Do Work That Matters

You will join a team dedicated to building world‑class Mainframe engineering capabilities underpinning CBA’s core systems of record. You will lead, coach and develop engineering talent delivering technology that powers Australia’s financial markets and improves customer financial wellbeing. You will also work with the latest technologies, including frontier GenAI models, to help shape the future of banking.

Your Impact

As a Senior Engineering Manager (Chapter Lead), you will:

  • Drive technical execution, delivery outcomes and engineering quality.

  • Establish and uplift modern engineering practices across the team.

  • Balance hands‑on engineering responsibilities with people leadership.

  • Ensure Mainframe platforms remain secure, resilient and highly available.

  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, customer‑focused solutions.

  • Influence how we deliver, operate and continuously improve.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Are senior engineering leaders with experience shaping technical strategy and leading high‑performing teams.

  • Bring deep Mainframe z/OS expertise, including SYSPLEX, major hardware migrations and platform engineering or architecture capability.

  • Understand how to design and operate highly available z/OS environments (TCP/IP, CICS, DB2, MQ).

  • Demonstrate strong diagnostic and debugging capability, including IPCS, Fault Analyzer, SMF analysis, and experience with z/OS and ISV upgrades using SMPE and zOSMF.

  • Are proficient in at least one programming language (e.g. COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, REXX, Java, Python, Go).

  • Have experience with modern engineering and automation practices including z/OS Connect, REST APIs, IBM IDz, Mainframe CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps, SRE principles and workflow automation.

  • Bring strong security and networking fundamentals, including RACF, AT‑TLS, certificate management, TCP/IP networking, routing, firewalls, proxies and IDS/IPS.

  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders and influence decision‑making.

It’s even better if you:

  • Have experience with open‑source Mainframe tools such as ZOWE, ZOWE CLI or VS Code extensions.

  • Have capability across Linux and Windows platforms, containers (Kubernetes, Podman, Docker) and Shell scripting.

  • Are familiar with GitHub, GitHub Actions, Ansible Automation Platform and Artifactory.

  • Have exposure to observability tooling including OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana and Splunk.

  • Have interest or experience in GenAI and LLM‑powered engineering tools, including Roo Code, Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.
