Anthropic

Engineering Manager, Passport

San Francisco, CA | Seattle, WA Full Time

About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

About the role

As Claude reaches more people — individuals, businesses, developers building on our APIs, and platforms building on top of those — knowing who's on the other side of a request becomes foundational to running our products responsibly. Passport is the team building that capability: a centralized identity, verification, and trust-grant platform.

We're hiring an Engineering Manager to build our Passport team. You'll expand the early team, define the architecture, and ship the first version of a platform that touches Claude.ai, our first-party APIs, and the third-party platforms built on top of them. This is a role with an unusually broad surface area: identity verification flows, a centralized trust graph, integration with our Safeguards organization, and a user-facing portal — all on the critical path for how Anthropic scales access to Claude safely.

About the team

Passport will own the customer verification and trust stack across Anthropic's products. The team's scope includes the entry flows customers go through to establish identity, a centralized model for coordinating and managing access, integration with review processes and the user-facing surfaces customers use to manage their trust across connected products. The team sits close to the product surfaces it serves and works closely with our safeguards, platform, and product organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the Passport team as a high performing contributing team to our wider model safety efforts — hire the early team, set the technical direction, and establish how the team operates
  • Own engineering execution end-to-end: planning, prioritization, delivery quality, team health, and incident response on a system that's on the critical path for every Claude product
  • Partner with safeguards, product, and design to shape the roadmap — and make the integration between automated decisions and human review work end-to-end
  • Work directly with customers and the go-to-market team on verification and trust requirements, joining key conversations and turning what you learn into engineering priorities
  • Drive the compliance and platform-readiness work customers and regulators require, partnering with security, legal, and the broader platform organization
  • Coordinate across the product teams that depend on Passport, making migrations and integrations land cleanly
  • Recruit, onboard, and grow strong engineers; give direct feedback and build a healthy, high-performing team

You may be a good fit if you

  • Have taken a product or platform from 0→1, making early architectural calls, and shipping the first versions with limited precedent to lean on
  • Are a skilled engineering manager who treats management as a craft — clear feedback, strong 1:1s, consistent investment in your team's growth
  • Have led teams building systems that other teams depend on, and understand the discipline that comes with being on someone else's critical path
  • Are comfortable working with customers and joining conversations alongside sales, customer success, and safeguards partners

Strong candidates may also have

  • Experience building customer verification or identity systems, including working with third-party verification providers
  • Background designing centralized policy or trust systems where decisions propagate across many downstream surfaces
  • Experience building trust & safety tooling, including the platform-side integration of human review into automated decisioning
  • Experience with multi-tenant platforms consumed by first-party apps, direct API customers, and third parties building on top
  • Background owning compliance and regulatory work within an engineering org
  • Experience with user-facing portals for account verification, trust, or compliance flows

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
