Engineering Manager – Whatley

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to provide strong leadership and technical support to the production department at our Whatley site. Your primary purpose will be to improve fixed plant availability, support operational performance, and help the site achieve a “best‑in‑class” coefficient through effective management of engineering, maintenance, and reliability activities. This role will require occasional unsocial hours, including call‑outs, shutdowns, and weekend work. Any such time will be compensated with time off in lieu, agreed in advance.

The Engineering Manager will play a key role in meeting site targets across safety, environmental performance, asset management, and operational efficiency while driving continuous improvement and sustainable business performance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and direct the mechanical and electrical teams to achieve agreed performance outcomes.
  • Ensure the team is fully resourced, trained, supervised, and competent.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, aligned with the site’s CLIMB objectives.

Safety & Sustainability

  • Work with Quarry and Logistics Managers to deliver the highest standards of health and safety in line with Heidelberg Materials’ H&S Plan.
  • Oversee Entropy actions, near-hit reporting, method statements, risk assessments, and permissions to proceed.
  • Investigate breakdowns and major downtime events to prevent recurring failures.

Asset & Maintenance Management

  • Improve asset coefficients through effective project management, capex planning, and S&R applications.
  • Ensure the preventative maintenance system (PPM) is fully utilised, prioritised, and effective.
  • Plan and communicate maintenance shutdowns and weekend works.
  • Manage static and mobile plant breakdown investigations and follow-up actions.

Operational Excellence

  • Support operational teams to achieve optimum production at lowest operating cost.
  • Collaborate with the technical team to ensure quality and operational procedures are followed.
  • Use Agg‑Flow principles and pit balance management to improve production and asset performance.

Environmental & Compliance

  • Ensure operations meet the highest environmental standards in line with the company’s Environmental Management Plan.
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory legislation, internal policies, and operational procedures.

Business Performance & Reporting

  • Deliver improvements in availability and coefficients (target: sustained 90%+).
  • Provide accurate data for site and global KPI reporting.
  • Support analysis of operational information to identify profit‑enhancing opportunities.
  • Manage engineering inventory, consignment stock, and cost controls.

Project Management

  • Scope, cost, present, and manage plant improvement and asset replacement projects from inception to completion.
  • Collaborate with site management in CAPEX proposals, HAZOPs, and project meetings.

Financial & Non‑Financial Accountability

  • Achieve agreed operational KPIs relating to safety, environment, production, and cost.
  • Ensure effective financial stewardship across engineering budgets, stock levels, and capex projects.

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent vocational or educational qualification).
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant operational experience.
  • NVQ Level 4 in SHE Quarry Operations.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
