Role overview

The Generative AI team at CarGurus is at the forefront of innovation, driving the creation of new AI-powered products and enabling other teams through collaboration and technical guidance. As Engineering Manager, you will lead a talented group of engineers focused on building, deploying, and scaling generative AI solutions that directly impact our business and customers. This is a highly visible leadership role that requires an entrepreneurial spirit, passion for experimentation, a deep understanding of AI technologies, and a commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and growth.

What you'll do

  • Spark innovation by leading the incubation of new AI-powered products, from ideation through production deployment.  
  • Partner with product managers and cross-functional teams to define a roadmap to deliver impactful solutions that drive business growth by solving user problems.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners—including Product, Design, Data Science, and other product engineering teams—to identify user problems and deliver impactful solutions.
  • Guide the team in rapidly prototyping, evaluating, and iterating on generative AI solutions, including LLM-based applications, agentic systems, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures.
  • Support team members’ career growth through individualized coaching, feedback, and development opportunities.  Foster a high-performing team to retain and recruit top engineering talent.
  • Champion the adoption of GenAI tools and methodologies across the organization, advocating for AI-driven solutions in both engineering practices and product development.

What you'll bring

  • An entrepreneurial spirit, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to rapidly turn ideas and problem statements into concrete, measurable solutions.
  • Proven experience (3+ years) managing and growing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a growth mindset, with a passion for continuous learning and experimentation.
  • Experience designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI applications in production environments, in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
  • Deep understanding of large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and RAG systems.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to motivate teams, solve complex problems, make data-driven decisions, and thrive in cross-functional settings.
  • Ability to translate complex technical insights into clear and actionable direction for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles.

Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
