Senior Principal Engineer – Modern Banking Platform (MBP)

About the Role:

The Senior Principal Engineer – MBP is a high‑impact individual contributor technical role within the Modern Banking Platform engineering organisation. This role carries end‑to‑end technical accountability for the architecture, scalability, resilience and performance of the MBP product suite.

Acting as a platform steward, the Senior Principal Engineer shapes long‑term technical direction, de‑risks strategic initiatives, and ensures MBP can scale across clients, geographies and deployment models without compromising availability, security, or change velocity.

This is a hands‑on, high‑influence role that partners deeply with:

• Product and engineering leadership

• Security, compliance, and risk teams

• SRE and infrastructure leaders

• Client technical and security stakeholders

• Executive leadership during critical decisions

What you will be doing:

1. Platform Architecture & Technical Stewardship

• Own the reference architecture for the Modern Banking Platform, spanning application services, data layers, integration patterns, and deployment topologies.

• Set and evolve architectural guardrails for microservices, APIs, eventing, data consistency, and platform extensibility.

• Drive long‑term architectural simplification, reducing systemic complexity and technical debt across MBP.

• Review and influence all material architectural decisions impacting scalability, operability, security, or regulatory posture.

• Ensure architectural choices support multi‑tenant, regional, and client‑specific deployment models.

2. Engineering Strategy & Technical Direction

• Translate MBP business and product strategy into multi‑year technical roadmaps.

• Identify structural risks early (scale limits, cost inefficiencies, coupling, availability gaps) and drive corrective action.

• Provide authoritative guidance on platform evolution topics such as:

    • cloud adoption models

    • data residency strategies

    • high‑availability and DR design

    • extensibility and partner integrations

Act as the technical escalation point for complex or high‑risk engineering decisions.

3. Reliability, Resilience & Operability

Set non‑negotiable standards for availability, resilience, fault isolation, and recovery.

• Partner with SRE and platform teams to ensure MBP is observable, operable, and supportable at scale.

• Drive post‑incident architectural learning for high‑severity production events, focusing on systemic fixes, not symptom mitigation.

• Advocate for engineering investments that materially reduce operational risk.

4. Customer & External Stakeholder Engagement

 Represent MBP technical and architectural posture in strategic client engagements, escalations, and due‑diligence reviews.

• Lead deep‑dive architecture and security discussions with client CTO, CISO, and architecture teams.

• Provide confidence to customers by articulating design intent, trade‑offs, and long‑term platform direction.

• Support large, complex, or non‑standard client deployments with architectural guidance.

5. Technical Leadership & Engineering Culture

• Serve as a role model for engineering excellence across MBP.

• Actively mentor Principal Engineers and senior technical leaders.

• Raise organisational standards for:

    • technical design quality

    • written architecture decisions

    • engineering rigor and accountability

Influence without authority; lead through clarity, technical depth, and credibility.

What you bring:

  • 20+ years of experience in large scale, distributed systems engineering

  • Demonstrated success as a Principal / Senior Principal / Distinguished level engineer in complex platforms.

    • Deep experience designing mission critical systems where availability, data integrity, and regulatory controls matter.

    • Strong understanding of modern platform patterns:

    • microservices and service governance

    • API first platforms

    • event driven architectures

    • cloud native and hybrid deployment models

    • Proven ability to influence senior leaders and navigate ambiguous, high stakes decisions.

Preferred Background

• Experience in banking, payments, financial services, or other highly regulated industries.

• Direct involvement in platform modernization or core system evolution programmes.

• Credibility in customer facing technical discussions with executives and regulators.

• Exposure to global, multi region product operations.
