Northrop Grumman, New River Energetics (NRE) at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia, operates a propellant manufacturing facility, producing energetic materials for the commercial and sporting markets. NRE also loads, assembles and packs medium caliber ammunition for U.S. government and international customers.

New River Energetics has an excellent opportunity for a Process Engineer, responsible for maintaining the process and product control activities for all propellant product families in the Commercial Powder Manufacturing (CP) line. This is a full-time, salaried position, reporting to the Manufacturing Process and Product Engineering Manager.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Correctly applies technical principles, theories, and concepts to develop Process and Product Control Plans, resolve process upset conditions, review process and product performance, maintain key process metrics and lead Root Cause Corrective Actions, if necessary. 
  • Ensures that the performance and quality of products conform to established standards, specifications and customer guidelines.
  • Works directly with operating entities and Program Management to ensure that process and product control analyses or inspections are conducted on a continuing basis to enforce requirements and meet specifications.
  • Ensures that the process control plans and policies are maintained and modified as needed.
  • Establishes and ensures process verifications and key process parameter reviews are conducted prior to and during the processing of product in the manufacturing processes.
  • Interface with customers for development of new or modification of existing products.
  • Interface with material suppliers to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Develop and execute capital projects that expand the efficiency and scrap reduction goals of all programs.
  • Implement projects that create a safer working environment for all employees.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering for a level 1.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering & 2 years of related experience OR Master’s degree in Engineering for a level 2
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Successful candidates will be Action Oriented, Resourceful, Tech Savvy, and will be able to Communicate Effectively and possess Situational Adaptability
  • Microsoft Office proficiency - Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license (Real ID)
  • Must be able to obtain clearance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives as an Employee Possessor
  • Must pass RFAAP badging requirements, including background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Chemical or Materials engineering background preferred
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Experience in propellant or explosives chemistry

Primary Level Salary Range: $59,900.00 - $89,900.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $72,100.00 - $108,100.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
